bigverybadtom I remember how years ago, when PBS brought the show to the US for the first time, the "Eleven" magazine was playing it up and building anticipation. But when my aunt, my mother, and I saw one episode, we were disappointed.A Rosie O'Donnell lookalike becomes the Church Of England vicar of an old-fashioned English town, and she comes into inevitable conflict with its residents. The episode we saw had her talk with another woman about selling homemade stuffed animals to raise money, but those were terrible. Then she mentions having a musician named "Reginald Dwight" as a relative, and of course the vicar and everyone else assumes she meant Elton John, so the town puts up signs advertising an Elton John concert.But this "Reginald Dwight" turns out to be a wizened old man who is not Elton John at all, and in desperation, the vicar finds another celebrity to perform instead, offering her the bribe of allowing her to worship the Devil without having to worry about going to Hell. So we have our concert after all, though with a different celebrity performer.The show might have been funnier in Britain; we were hardly impressed or amused.

paint9698 Utterly unfunny...I mean honestly is there any truth in a sex crazed, chocaholic vicar who has nothing but disrespect for what she's supposed to be ACTUALLY doing. I found the whole thing cynical, unconvincing and treating country folk like they're nothing but morons. Very ugly, nasty even...But to top it off it's poorly written, Dawn French can make nothing of what are supposed to be witty one liners.It's the sort of sitcom where after every line you go UGGGGGGHHHHH... The rest of the cast are no better, the town millionaire, his idiot son and his comatose daughter-in-law try to act as merrily idiotic as is humanly IMPOSSIBLE. And that doesn;t even mention the half witted farmer and the slutty old lady...all supposedly hilarious. Truly abysmal television

suemartin23264 The Vicar of Dibley had me in stitches when it was first aired in 1994. Now, I make sure to catch it whenever it's shown on TV. It never bores me! The First Series is very funny and I would recommend this to everyone. It's best to start watching this from the very beginning.This was followed by two specials : The Easter Bunny - which is hilarious, but also features the death of one of my favourite characters, and The Christmas Lunch Incident - which is definitely not one to be missed! After this, the sitcom gets seriously funny, what with the Comic Relief shorts and the final two Christmas specials - which are some of the best pieces of comedy ever to be filmed! In short, you'd be very stupid to miss this. The episodes are always aired now and again, so just catch one on the TV sometime, and I promise you, by the end - you'll be begging for more!

MartinHafer This is sort of an Anglican version of FATHER TED--another favorite BBC comedy series. However, unlike TED, where the priests are THE dumb ones on the show, with the VICAR OF DIBLEY, Dawn French plays a sane reverend among a village of total idiots. The only exception is David, who is NOT a complete moron--instead he's pretty much a selfish stick in the mud. Each episode features the most amazingly dumb dialog by the cast of regulars--and they are so dumb you often laugh out loud and yet, in a strange way, you really grow to like them. All the original episodes are great, though I have to admit the quality dropped a bit when they had a few additional episodes years later--the newer ones tended to be pretty maudlin and everyone seemed to spend too much time remembering and not enough time just being their stupid selves.Excellent writing, acting and direction make this a great series and among the best from BBC.
