A contemporary take on a seemingly perfect Catholic family, whose lives take an unexpected turn when surprising truths are revealed. Instead of ruining their family, the honesty triggers a new, messier chapter where everyone stops pretending to be perfect and actually starts being real.

The Real O'Neals Audience Reviews

Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
ChanBot i must have seen a different film!!
Calum Hutton It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Candida It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
joeyford-55342 Save yourself 30 minutes and re-watch an old episode of Andy Griffin instead. As another reviewer said, there is a reason the church and most of society is offended here -- yuck. After one show I had to go take a shower to wash off the humor. In a world where Dan Savage is a moral leader -- this show is pushed as "the new normal." Remember him? He was the Obama guy for gay bullying who got thrown out of a HS for cussing at the Christian kids in the crowd, calling them "gay" as an insult!? Confused? Yep -- so his he. Skip this mess. It won't last through it's PC forced second season with the lowest viewership numbers in its time-slot.
trimblair The reason MILLION MOM'S and the CATHOLIC CHURCH are boycotting the station for this show about the young Mr. Savage is not because it is pro-gay and anti-Christian, but because it is very offensive in every way possible. They hang a Holy Mary over the toilet so the boys remember to not pee on the seat. They make Christian cookies to make the son who is bulimic eat. This show uses every old THREE'S COMPANY theme ever. Over hear a secret on an open mic -- check. Girl learns karate to protect herself and becomes a bully -- check. Girl starts a charity and steals from it -- check. Jesus doesn't visit Christian parents but visit gay son who doesn't believe in him daily -- what? The show won't last. Too liberal. Gets less views than several shows that were cut this year. The GLAAD folks are pushing it so it might get a second season but with the lowest viewership in its time zone, won't last. To me, the biggest issue is it is just not funny. SKIT THIS
Tom_Grayson The Real O'Neals is a fun family comedy with surprisingly beautiful dynamics among the 3 teenage children, who are - despite the flaws of their family - very loving and supportive of one another.I have always been a fan of the hilarious Martha Plimpton and she certainly doesn't disappoint here. I can burst in laughter just at the mere sight of her facial expressions.Noah Galvin, as her cute son Kenny, has great comic timing, while Mad Men's Jay R. Ferguson has fine chemistry with Plimpton that makes you root for their characters to work out their differences.Although I feel the writing hasn't reached its full potential yet, that's hardly unusual as most comedies take time to figure out their characters and see what works best (case in point - ABC's #2 comedy The Goldbergs). But, there is definitely immense potential here if ABC is patient enough and takes time to nurture this fine comedy and help it grow. Not surprisingly, most of the criticism of this series here on IMDb and elsewhere is not based on the show's own merits, but rather comes from people with antiquated anti-gay agenda, who also believe their religion is beyond reproach and have loathed The Real O'Neals before even seeing a single second of the pilot. As such, an open-minded viewer looking for a fun and endearing family comedy should instantly dismiss these bigoted critics and give it a chance.
eventpix We just saw the first and fourth episodes of this at a screening and since the audience loved it and were laughing like crazy I have to say that I am suspicious of a few of the eleven revues I see here. It seems that the Catholic League and the Hundred.....er... 'Million Moms' have a problem with it so I can't help but wondering if they are using IMDb to try to scuttle it.It's a very funny comedy which deals with timely and serious issues. If you think that a young gay character should not be depicted on broadcast TV or that the Catholic Church is a sacred institution about which nothing humorous can ever be said or even implied than I suggest you steer away from this show. However, I have to say that I thought the pilot one of the best I have ever seen. If I had any problem with the show it was that the Catholic School that he was attending wasn't dealing with him the way that the Catholic League is dealing with this show, in other words going on the attack with reckless abandon. All five members of this family were a bit over the top but I liked them all. The relationship between the mother and the son was especially unusual in my experience with sitcoms so I'm not sure where the notion that this series is 'nothing new' is coming from?Looking at the five 1*star reviews that are present , as I am writing this, two were from members who have never reviewed anything before, one from a reviewer whose only recent reviews were "Trash" and "Terrible" and one from someone who loved "Paul Blart: Mall Cop II" saying "This is the kind of film we need more of in America. No profanity, no homos"..... So if that's where you're coming from stay away from The Real O'Neals. Otherwise, I suggest you give it a try.
