Officer Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie) from a rich family is a rookie paired up with training officer John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) who is secretly a homosexual and dealing with a pain killer addiction. Homicide detective Lydia Adams (Regina King) is a smart independent woman living with her mother. Officer Chickie Brown (Arija Bareikis) suffers from her outrageous partner Dewey Dudek (C. Thomas Howell). Officer Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy) is stressed from his crazed wife Tammi (Emily Bergl). This starts off as a gritty character-driven police drama on NBC. It got sold to TNT in the second season and the show becomes more procedural in later years. It becomes one outrageous police encounter after another. The big takeaway for me is that Ben McKenzie shows that he has a wider range than hinted at in The O.C. I liked him in Junebug but in this one, his character actually grows over the years along with his acting talents.

We get so many cop shows these days that it becomes difficult to watch them all and so you will have to pick one out of the lot. Well to me Southland is by far the best cop series of them all. It feels all so real to me, every story grips you. It's like you are cruising through the streets of Los Angeles yourself trying to catch the bad guys. The characters are all top notch in this show. Cooper, Bryant, Adams and Sherman all have their own different personality that gives this show the necessary boost. I watched the complete five seasons of this series in less then two weeks. That's how good I thought it was. Too bad it's all over.

I'm a devour of TV series. So far i have never met something as good as Southland when it comes to drama. This TV series is the perfect example of unappreciated outside of the box thinking. Great cast, great characters, great turn of events, non-linear action. I really don't know why people didn't watch it. I guess cheap stuff like Teenwolf or other soap opera like movies are more audience catchy than this perfect mirrored Real Life action. If you have time Southland is a MUST SEE ! PS I think TNT should have targeted the audience outside USA so SOUTHLAND should have lived longer. I would have pay2view it online anytime.

'Southland' is a no-nonsense American cop drama, each episode following a squadron of L.A. police as they go upon their daily rounds in a mock fly-on-the-wall style. Much of each episode is incidental, featuring the random sequence of small and large crimes that each policeman or policewoman has to deal with: there is typically one story per episode that is worked out as a conventional plot, while the personal relations of the characters evolve in the background. The absence of forced melodrama makes it a compelling watch, although the protagonists tend to take their closest personal feelings home (and off-camera) with them at the end of the day. I've seen more ambitious dramas; but there's a commendable terseness that gives 'Southland' a real feel of authenticity.
