StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

Keyra J I've now seen every episode of both season 1 and season 2 at least 10 times, probably more. I did not see it on TV for whatever reason. I think I've seen some advert for the show on TV maybe once and forgot about it, so I was not even well aware about the show until I came across it on Amazon Instant video and it already had rave reviews.What a mesmerizing piece of art, culture, entertainment and just pure simple PLEASURE. It lets you forget about your everyday concerns and immerses you into a totally new bohemian world. The music is phenomenal. In fact it is SO very beautiful that just like others I hope Bombshell will become a real musical on Broadway some time soon. The music, along with the story line that included both love drama and competition, plus the wonderful cast - all contributed to the greatness of the show. I have to also mention that choreography is really nice and if you watch the show more than once, you will notice and enjoy the choreography a LOT! I absolutely loved both Megan and Katharine. Katharine is a novice, but her "newness" is what works so well, she is refreshing and so very real. And her voice,.. oh her voice is just beautiful! You are my star, Katharine! Megan, thank you, Megan, for making Ivy such a memorable, love her and hate her, can't stand her and really feel for her, character, who can sing, dance and act. You rock! I can't imagine anyone better than Jack Davenport for the role of Derek; so charismatic. In fact almost the WHOLE cast was just amazing! Although I am a huge fan of Uma Thurman, somehow in this show I kept picturing someone else for the role of Rebecca; maybe Rebecca was a bit too much for the classy Uma.After I watched season 1, it took me some time to get adjusted to season 2. The two seasons are totally different. I would say season 1 is a bit more pure. But season 2 is great in its own way. The 2 main negatives I would note about season 2 are the teenage look of some of the new members of the main cast, and sparse choreography in Hitlist. The music is absolutely beautiful again. But it is more on the pop side, so without appropriate choreography, it stops being a Broadway musical and becomes a series of pop songs on stage with a few side dancers. In season one, Bombshell is rehearsed in a studio appropriate for dance rehearsals, where the ensemble is dressed to rehearse. In season two, the ensemble of the new musical wears casual Friday clothes to the rehearsals, so the feel of "there is something special in the works" is being lost. The story of Hitlist is a bit like Harry Potter. I also find that Veronica's character was a bit confusing and maybe unimportant; although I have to say Jennifer's performance of I Can't Let Go is a show stopper; what a great song matched by a great voice! The greatness of Season 2 comes from the wonderful music, the competition between the two shows and the two girls, and from story line in general that allows you to take a peak into the world of Broadway, off Broadway and how the musical shows go from an idea to standing ovations. I hope there will soon been Season 3, Season 4 and Season 5, all allowing us to peek into the world of theater, musical theater, movie making, song and show writing, awards, and everything that happens behind the scenes. And I hope that Karen, Ivy, Derek, Julia, Tom, and Eileen, along with the rest of their friends, will all be coming back to our lives.

wizbang68 Smash started out as a "behind the scenes" look at what happens during development and promotion of NY Theatre. There were some other reviews where I wonder if the reviewers were watching the same program. During season 1 the show got in a rut of creating what some referred to as "soap opera drama". However, anyone involved with the theatre industry can attest to how the majority of the promotion and development of a show is based almost entirely on drama. From the funding (or lack thereof) to changes in casting all being somewhat surreal, so it lends itself to this type of plot. Someone referred to the sound not being good. Um, I had my surround sound speakers picking up a Dolby Surround signal and it was quite good audio. There were some moments that did seem a little too "Glee-esque" where everyone seems to suddenly break into song..... but I accepted that this was a program about a NY Musical being produced for Broadway. That said, the productions numbers were quite good if you actually paid attention to the interaction during the numbers because it was many times letting the viewer in on changes that were occurring or background for a change to the plot. For example in one scene the director was trying to figure out who was going to play the lead role. He started looking at the costumes for different numbers and you saw excerpts from the numbers and who he saw playing the role. It ended up that the person who was the front runner wasn't selected, not because she wasn't good, but because the director couldn't picture her doing it.All in all they were finding their way, but season 2 went somewhat off the rails with the plot line where it was difficult to connect the dots until the very end of the season. Unfortunately, the disconnect seems to have put the nail in the coffin of the program. At least the program season wrapped up the different story-lines so that everything had been closed and a future direction for the program was presented if it was renewed, alas it was not to be.

lerrika89 That season started not as good as expected. The first one was all about dramatic moments around Ivy Derek and Karen. Although It was never interesting for me to watch second role characters. What I loved about second season is 3 Broadway shows were put in motion. Comedy, Bombshell, and story about love. So it was not about Bombshell only! But something was missing. And probably this dramatic effect that kept audience intense during season 1. Nevertheless starting from episode 7 it turned my interest back. They made gorgeous performances, choreography, songs! New love triangle! Excited about how the plot will be developed. Smash, you surprised me. Keep it this way and hopefully we'll see season 3.

mana6793 I was reluctant to watch this show as I thought it was going to be a failed attempt at another glee type show, however when I found out Katherine Mcphee in it I was immediately intrigued so I gave it a chance and I am so glad that I did, I like how a lot of the music is new songs written for the show, however they are not the main focus, it is about the process of making a Broadway show with a lot of musical scenes to make it even better, and the singers and actors are all incredible.I have really enjoyed learning more about the behind the scenes of Broadway, but its not too much that you get confused or sick of it, you really fall in love/hate with the characters. The characters are also very complex which I love, you never know what one of them is going to do nextI never realised before how amazing Debra Messing is until this show, her acting is fantastic, and Megan Hilty is such a star. Any comparisons to Glee are simply because they both involve music, however they focus on entirely different things, SMASH is very mature and will easily appeal to an older audience, glee however is for teens and kids (like me, I love glee!) but this show is much more dramatic.I watched the whole of series 1 in 2 days and as soon as I finished it I wanted to watch it again, which is exactly what I did!
