Load of rubbish!!

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

In response to genau's sour and sarcastic comments, much of the acting on 'Shortland Street' is remarkably good. Given how cheaply and quickly the series is produced, the standard of performance has always been very high. 'Shortland Street' has given significant employment to many actors who have later gone on to further their careers in film and television in New Zealand, Australia and beyond. The current cast is particularly capable but quality acting on soap operas is seldom acknowledged. The series continues to rate highly with a broad audience and is established as a New Zealand institution. Too many New Zealanders love this show for genau's silly comments to stand unchallenged.

Shorty Street has been going on for so long and although i've only been watching for the past year or so, i love it. Sure, it has it's fair share of slip-ups and dullness, but I think it's wonderful anyway. It's nice to see so many young NZ actors doing so well on screen. Personally, i find 'real life drama' quite good, in the sense that you could possibly imagine a real person being in that situation. I'll admit, the characters are sometimes lacking in personality, and the script lacking in spontaniety, but shorty gets along okay. *** out of *****

I have kind of a love/hate relationship with this show - sometimes it is gripping, funny and touches on various social issues pretty well, and other times the story and the characters are so stoopid I want to scream! I've been watching it off and on since the beginning of 1992, there's been times when I can't miss a single episode, other times when I couldn't care less. Shortland St does pretty good villains, though - the characters of Mckenzie Choat, Oscar Henry, Greg Feeney and Aleesha Cook (among others) are all unforgettable!
