There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

"Scream Queens" is one of the three 2015-2016 attempts to make a slasher TV series; the others are "Slasher" and "Scream". None of them are quite as good as 2009's "Harper's Island", at least in their first seasons, but they all have their strengths. If "Slasher" was the most serious one (95% horror, 5% comedy) and "Scream" was self-aware in the manner of the movies (50% horror, 50% comedy), "Scream Queens" is their most openly satirical, sometimes even cartoonish cousin (30% horror, 70% comedy). Its satire of the popularity-obsessed social-media culture is spot-on, even if after three-four episodes you may get the feeling that it keeps making the same satirical points over and over; it does get excessively talky (and pop-reference-heavy) on occasion. But it does have an intricate, labyrinthine plot which is tied up in a neat little bundle by the end of the first season. The casting is excellent (Emma Roberts is brilliantly sarcastic, Skylar Samuels is really beautiful, Bilie Lourd has a great deep voice, "Chad" the stud and "Denise" the security officer-cum-chief of police are very funny, etc.), and the soundtrack features a superb collection of classic pop hits. *** out of 4.

Scream Queens combines the classic, lovable qualities of John Hughes' brat pack films combined with the cheesy horror of 80's slasher films. It follows a cast of delightfully superficial characters, inspired by Heathers, dressed in the finest couture. The writing is absolutely ASTOUNDING. The dialogue is biting, quick-witted, and overall, hilarious, and there's a TON of character development. One of my favorite things about this show is analyzing Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts) character arc. On the surface, Oberlin is cold and shallow, but throughout the series, we see that she is willing to make sacrifices for her friends and is deep down, actually a pretty awesome character. What makes Scream Queens so unique is that it follows a mainly- female cast of Millennial characters struggling with issues that many young women do experience, mixed in with the campy fun of a serial killing antagonist that's right out of Scooby Doo. I'm actually quite disappointed because I heard the ratings were terrible for this show, and apparently season three might not be happening. Not many young women have cable, and many of the viewers of this series are of this particular demographic, so I find it rather upsetting that they're basing the future of the show on ratings. Honestly, I've never encountered a series that is quite as campy, empowering, or inspiring as Scream Queens. I hope that they create season three, because as a young woman, I feel as if not many shows nowadays really speak to me the way this does. So many try, but not many succeed. In fact, I can't name one that's quite as great as Scream Queens. Also, on a more technical note, the acting, cinematography, costuming, editing, and production design in this show is just fantastic. I know a lot of people praise American Horror Story, and this is really similar in terms of cinematography and editing. Give it a chance, I know you'll just love it! :)

This horror parody mixes goofy, popular-girls comedy with slasher-style horror. And for a while, I really enjoyed this. But about two-thirds of the way through season one I began losing interest. Scream Queens is basically variations on one joke involving a costumed serial killer. Much of the humor involves the awfulness of the sorority and frat sisters and the various offbeat death scenes. The story is elaborate but the focus on comedy means the plot is too silly to be really compelling and the characters stupidity becomes repetitive.I watched all of season 1, although with less and less interest, and then watched one episode of season 2 just to see how they kept it going. Some new actors, a new killer, but basically the same joke. I give it a 7 because it was really quite enjoyable for over half of season 1, but I'm checking out now.

Fox Network are onto a good thing with Scream Queens. Its a camp, slasher horror that has all the right ingredients. Its the mix of camp satire of the modern age and its material shallowness, combined with a solid revisiting of the classic 80's slasher flick that gets this show cooking. There's strong flavours of Friday the 13th and Halloween on offer. Indeed, the producers even had the good sense to include icon of classic slasher flick Halloween, Cathy Lee Curtis, in the series. Curtis also has a natural talent for comedy, that comes across in spades in this series. She's a great choice for the cast. As is relative newcomer, Emma Roberts and co do a wonderful job as the absurdly shallow and snotty sorority girls, The Chanel's. Season two has just started and I cannon't wait to take a look. Eight out of ten from me.
