Good concept, poorly executed.

Excellent adaptation.

A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.

Sometimes a show comes along that's so different from anything else, so warped in all of its details, that it only finds a niche audience and is rejected out of hand by a lot of people who just don't get it. Invader Zim was one such show, and Saul of the Mole Men is another. The intentional low-budget cheesiness is a huge part of the show's charm and humor. It may take a while to get used to the blue-screen, computer background style, but once you get used to it, it's gorgeous -- the scenes with the fire people, and the flood scene, are amazing. The plot clips along at a fast pace, the weirdness is unrelenting, and most of all, it's not just the same old tired jokes and routines. Yeah, there's a certain level of lowbrow humor, but everything else more than makes up for it. I hope this gets released on DVD, or better yet, brought back for a new season. For everyone who says it's just stupid and that no one should like it, go back to watching Everyone Loves Raymond or something equally as tired and predictable, and leave Saul alone.

I loved the idea of this show... having the schlub survivor of an expedition explore a subterranean realm filled with comically cheesy special effects. And overall I thought the show was pretty good visually. But the writing was just plain lazy. Unlike the sets and costumes, the writing did little to evoke the feel of those old live-action Saturday morning kids' shows. Plus, there weren't many jokes as other reviewers have noted... just deadpan whining by Saul. Apparently the writers thought to themselves, "This resembles something people will remember from when they were ten but with some blood, a naughty joke and a bit of whining.. so it's funny!" Well, no it's not.

I enjoyed Gardner's previous effort "Wanderlust," mostly because it had a fine sense of timing (i.e., editing) and the benefit of exotic locales. Had it been a cartoon, say, or done on soundstages, it certainly wouldn't have held any appeal."Saul of the Mole Men" holds almost no appeal for me. It's a pastiche of several tried-and-ruined Adult Swim gags, including campy parody of ancient children's shows, overdrawn pauses, boring puerility, self-consciously poor sets (it's the live-action equivalent to the ridiculously deconstructive "12 Oz. Mouse"), and the comically fearful murder of a friendly alien species. In short, Adult Swim really needs to stop fetishizing the children's programming with which its employees/creators grew up. If you can imagine a show even more heavy-handed and reliant on its production to overcome the weak jokes than "Moral Orel," this is it. The only positive I could find was the second-long appearance of Dana Snyder. This is a one-note show that doesn't deserve the chance to improve to mediocrity, but Adult Swim's got just the people to do it.

Plenty of times I have watched and enjoyed movies and TV shows that where more about the script than the production budget. Saul of the Mole Men tries to act as parody and farce of shows like Land of the Lost, but falls short in the following area: It's not funny. There are no discernible jokes, just an attempt to make people laugh because of how absurd it is that a show is made this bad. Long shots with bad special effects of an actor obviously running in place, acting that would embarrass a middle-school musical production, and idiotic decisions on the part of main characters are what the writers HOPE will amuse the audience.Unlike shows such as Sealab 2021 and Venture Brothers who also take jabs at their source material, I have to assume that SotMM is hoping that it's viewing demographic is either high or VERY easily amused. There are better things to watch on a late Sunday night, and I hope other people realize that also.
