Good concept, poorly executed.
Nayan Gough
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film

Ninjago: Masters of Spinjtzu is the first LEGO animated series to actually evolve into a full television program with different seasons and episodes. Although everyone says that the series is based on the LEGO Ninjago sets that coincide with each season, it is actually the other way around these days: the sets are actually based on the stories written by the Hageman Brothers. Since there are many different seasons, here are my thoughts on each below: Pilots (2011) - Not an actual season, but they're short, sweet, and to the point. The voice talents are great, as well as the characters.Season 1: Rise of the Snakes (2012) - By far the best of the series without any doubt. The Serpentine are great villains, and the direction that they take in expanding the characters of each Ninja is very well done. If you haven't seen any episodes of Ninjago, this is the season to watch first.Season 2: The Green Ninja/The Final Battle (2012) - This season is kind of odd at the beginning, as most of the early episodes have nothing to do with the "Final Battle". Some of the "filler" episodes were good, others were somewhat pointless. The introduction of the Overlord is well done, as well as the Final Battle itself.Season 3: Rebooted (2014) - A lot of people didn't like the whole "techno" vibe that this season has, but I think it's decent. The whole story is done pretty well, as well as the return of the Overlord as the main villain. The only things that I didn't like about this season were the pointless relationship between Nya and Cole and Pythor shrinking at the end.Season 4: Tournament of Elements (2015) - Not my favorite season, but it has a lot of good characters. This season's backstory of the Serpentine War is actually a major plot hole with season 1, but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the season. The actual Tournament is great, although the ending is a bit disappointing and the portrayal of Pythor in this season is an embarrassment to his role in season 1.Season 5: Possession (2015) - Not my favorite season either, but still great for what it is. Season 5 has a much darker feel to it than any other season that has preceded it. Overall, the story is good. The only things that I really didn't like about this season were the episode "Cloud Kingdom" and the character of the Preeminent.Season 6: Skybound (2016) – A bit better than the previous two seasons in my opinion, but still not the greatest. The backstories in this season are well done, and there really isn't anything to complain about. The villains were interesting, and not something that I ever expected from a full season. Nadakhan was a great villain, although I feel like they could have used his character a bit more.I can't say anything more past this. An hour-long special titled "Day of the Departed" is scheduled to air in the United States on Cartoon Network on October 29, and a whole new season is scheduled to air sometime in 2017. Overall, this is actually a great series that I think children and adults alike will enjoy long after its end.

So far, we've been surprised by how well done this series is. Being a toy-selling series, we honestly were expecting the kind of shows we saw advertising toys when we were young: pointless, poorly written, and cheesy beyond belief. As adults, we actually ENJOY watching this series, and seeing what happens! Since it is geared to children (I would say about ages 8- 12), some of the plot "twists" are actually fairly obvious for an adult, but still interesting. The ideas about devotion, loyalty, and accepting differences have also been really useful in our household, where we have been able to have effective discussions about autism, disability, and ability based on these characters and their adventures. We have also been able to discuss social interactions and ways to think about others in ways that can be hard to broach with this middle-elementary age: that people who seem to be friends may not be, that bullies have their own issues, and ideas of including others and finding your own talents when others don't include you. There are lots of other good, complex issues of relationships presented here, in terms this age group can grasp and see. We actually find ourselves wishing there were MORE toys associated with this series, not less. And unfortunately, many of the figures are exclusively available through the larger, very expensive Lego sets (do keep in mind this series is intended to sell you toys!)
