Good concept, poorly executed.

Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

I'd like to echo the sentiments already expressed.I also never realised how long this programme had been running. And that has to be a measure of how successful it has been as a format. Jeremy Paxman has evolved from dark-haired belligerent post-graduate to greying belligerent geezer in the interim. In a way, he has become as much an institution as Patrick Moore and 'The Sky At Night'. That is not to diminish the other presenters, but they follow the footsteps he set down in argumentative confrontation. Kirsty Warke does well, but needs a harder edge. It's a great end to the day's news, with excellent research and detailed infill to the stories being headlined.Definitely top-drawer.

This is a British gem and also a late night wake up call - because they do not let the politicians get away with anything and chase up an answer until the politicians go blue in the face (or red with embarrassment) Paxman is a legend and Gavin Hesler is a great 2nd in command - and believe me these boys are in command of their world and space! Michael Crick makes a quirky addition to the team and also pumps in an original energy but also there is mark Urban, the analyst and respect by US Generals when talking about Iraq and its battles/hot spots. I hope one day that they make a film about the legend that is Paxman - Yeeeesss!!!!Keep up the good work BBC2 - that's what you were created for!!

As I write this review (Jan 2005) Newsnight is celebrating its silver jubilee and I didn't realise it was this old. It first came to our screens in 1980.Each show usually includes in depth reports on both national and international issues, interviews with famous people including world leaders, a news summery and each programme ends with reviews of the front pages of the following day's newspapers. Newsnight is usually shown on BBC2 at 10.30 pm.Newsnight has had several presenters over the years including Peter Snow and the current presenters are Kirsty Wark, Gavin Esler and, best of all, the excellent Jeremy Paxman.Long may Newsnight continue.
