Maid Marian and her Merry Men is a British children's sitcom created and written by Tony Robinson and directed by David Bell. It began in 1989 on BBC One and ran for four series, with the last episode shown in 1994. The show was a partially musical comic retelling of the legend of Robin Hood, placing Maid Marian in the role of leader of the Merry Men, and reducing Robin to an incompetent ex-tailor. The programme was much appreciated by children and adults alike, and has been likened to Blackadder, not only for its historical setting and the presence of Tony Robinson, but also for its comic style. It is more surreal than Blackadder, however, and drops even more anachronisms. Many of the show's cast such as Howard Lew Lewis, Forbes Collins, Ramsay Gilderdale and Patsy Byrne had previously appeared in various episodes of Blackadder alongside Robinson. Like many British children's programmes, there is a lot of social commentary sneakily inserted, as well as witty asides about the Royal family, buses running on time, etc. Many of the plots spoofed or referenced film and television shows including other incarnations of Robin Hood in those mediums.

diveinthedark-89834 After Black Adder, Fry + Laurie did Jeeves And Wooster, Rowan Atkinson did Mr. Bean, and what did Tony Robinson do next ? Not much, only a highly classy, highly original and simply phenomenal TV comedy that parodied not only The Robin Hood legend but contemporary society as we knew it in the early 90s !Officially for children, I've met countless people who watched this back in the day as adults; the appeal was far more universal ! Too un-PC by today's standards, the merry men was composed of the most unlikely tribe imaginable; female leader, a dwarf, a Rasta man, a stupid fat bloke called Rabies and a highly camp, wimpy Robin Hood! The humour essentially evolved around anachronisms - "This is a royal wedding, not an Oxfam shop"; "You're singing is bad enough to win the Eurovision Song Contest !", as well as the more fitting lines like "I'm not raising money for the royal arsenal; I hate football !" The songs certainly gave the show another fun edge, especially the 'Father Bloopy' song that sent up Christmas !I don't think today's children would understand this programme. For a start it would be considered too un-PC for airing today, and the kids would think the modern references are to make it seem cool, not ironic !
nvh1982 This was my fave programme when I was little (well littler, Im 19 now but was about 7 or 8 when it was first on). It still appeals to me now although I missed many of the recent repeats due to college (blub). I am just hoping that CBBCs new channel shows repeats of it. It was recently voted number 21 in the top 100 kids tv list, I thought I was the only one who really loved this ace show thank god I was wrong. Also Wayne Moris deserves much more succes than he has got, he was gorge as Robin (he was my first crush) and I think I recently spooted him in a sweet ad poor luv!
intermilan83 This series is so understated . The characters are played with perfection . Kate longeran who play's marian plays the leader with great ease . Wayne moris who play's robin is very very funny as the charachter . The series created by time teams tony robinson is a great atempt at this great hollywood topic of marian and robin hood . This series is far different from it's hollywood counterparts . It does not look down on its audience and is truthful and frank at it's young audience. And in reminicant of Robin hood men in tights but out does it's hollywood slap stick comedy twin . A great series not well past it's sell by date please bbc we want more.
eva.bernstein The series was brilliant even in German - as, luckily, they didn't dub the songs. The humour was just funny, as me and all my friends thought - and even my younger brothers loved it! Besides, the series provides explanations for the big questions of mankind - like the invention of snooker... My favourite Robin Hood pictures!
