FuzzyTagz If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Tanuj Poddar I started watching it with a pretty much blank slate, not really expect much. To my surprise, the series did keep me engaged enough to binge through to the end. The plot circles around a T20 cricket franchise named Mumbai Mavericks playing in the Powerplay League. The main plot is centered around a cunning businessman buying the team and influencing it by hook or by crook to achieve his ulterior motives. The series spanning 10 episodes it tightly scripted with multiple sub plots shedding light on the members of the team, the sub plots often times fail to leave an impact. The series begins with glamour and larger than life portrayal of its characters to attract attention, builds up a stronger story-line in the middle, becomes predictable towards the end and then horribly botch it all up in the end while concluding.Vivek Oberoi and Richa Chaddha were the most well known in the cast, but Richa was patchy and inconsistent whereas Vivek failed to look the part, mostly overacting. The interactions between Vivek and Richa towards the beginning of the series were just laughable in terms of the dialogue delivery, specially the dialogues in English. Vivek's unveiling his game plan to his business partners was the only part where he looked good. The other members of the cast specially Angad, Tanuj, Siddhant, Sayani and Sanjay had great chemistry as a team and gave the audience something to relate to and root for. Siddhant's character has the best built up and his performance shines through. Amit Sial and Manuj Sharma had too much on their plate in terms of providing comic relief as well as executing the not-so-well intention-ed plans of the boss, in the end they fail in delivering the desired impact. Production value (apart from the actual cricket matches) is good and makes it watchable and binge watching the series might help you get through to the end without feeling very disappointed. While with its set of fallacies, the good parts of the series still pull the rating to a 7 for me.
bugsnest You know you are dealing with quality content when people speak like they normally would in their part of the world. It gets tiresome watching Indians speak English in Hollywood produced films where they sound anywhere between participating in a P.G Wodehouse school play or like Apu from the Simpsons! So I was pleasantly surprised to see the actors here speak like people in Bombay (or other parts of India) normally would. A good mix of English, Hindi and "Hinglish"... and a few good "gaalis" (curse words) thrown in to add that extra layer of authenticity! The show has a lot of things going for it - 1) A well paced plot, 2) Solid actors - both in the lead roles and the ones who have small parts. This is a great ensemble cast with very little star power, yet everyone looks very sincere and earnest in playing their roles. 3) Excellent aesthetics - you can almost tell Farhan Akthar and Ritesh Sidhwani are involved somehow, with the attention to detail! 4) Situations that are rooted in reality. And that's probably what makes the show connect to Indians all over... Cricket is a religion in India, as cliched as it may sound, but this series goes farther into the psyche of the players and the people who "play behind the scenes"...These range from small time bookies, enablers, politicians, Bollywood and underworld figures, drug dealers, businessmen etc. And an entire ecosystem of sports managers, media personnel, product endorsements deals, announcers etc. This entire nexus between the sportsmen, their dependents and the fringe characters come together nicely in "Inside Edge". Despite the many characters and sub-plots, the writing is tight and rarely meanders. The series also has its flaws--- 1) The relationships seem almost caricaturish, as do some of the characters. 2) The English, while spoken effortlessly, does seem forced in many situations where switching to Hindi or English may have been more apt.. 3) The sex almost always look forced (no pun intended).. I get the modern, bold India concept where people are more sexually expressive and demanding, than their previous generations... but the creators of the show seem contractually obliged to force that concept down your throat in every episode! 4) The character development also seem half baked. For example, the Vivek Oberoi and Haryana Huurricanes owner character, could have been shaped up to be more nuanced/complex ... and earlier episodes appear to go in that direction... but then that gets thrown by the wayside and the creators resort to confining them to a standard Bollywood definition of a villian or an opportunist. All that said, this is still an amazing attempt and a very exciting watch. I look forward to seeing some of these actors in other projects. But above all, this may indicate Television in India finally coming out of the slapstick, soapy, brain numbing slump that has prevailed since the early 90's towards quality, intelligent content. Hats off to the the real players behind this show for bringing this together!
Ajit Tiwari "Inside Edge" is India's first Amazon web series and it is a fresh breeze. It defies the strictures of decayed Indian daily soap opera and creates a new template for original and gritty content lovers. The production value is high with an ensemble cast. Thanks to Amazon and Essel Entertainment (Farhan Akhtar & Ritesh Sidhwani). The content is edgy and niche, it shows us the ugliness and prettiness of showbiz and cricket, the two most loved industries of this generation. The deceit, crime, vendetta, and manipulation are the main ingredients of this excellent served dish. Some of the actors did a phenomenal job like Amit Sial, Angad Bedi, Tanuj Virvani & Siddhant Chaturvedi. Richa Chaddha as waning actress needs a better dialogue delivery and Vivek Oberoi as a shrewd magnate goes over the top sometimes. However, being an Indian show, it occasionally becomes too dramatic with some larger than life characters and instances, which seems pretentious. Having seen TVF's Pitchers, Permanent Roommates, Tripling, Humorously Yours etc. are not equipped with rich production but the acting & content are more relevant and inventive.Overall, Amazon and Netflix are giving the prospect to the Indian creative pool to come at par with Narcos, House of Cards, Ozark, Breaking Bad etc. It is good to see "Inside Edge" making a mark here.7.5/10. Waiting for Season 2.
Akshay Kumar (akshay-ak-kumar) Finally, we have a web series in India made by a top production house with great production values, good content and story and a well known star cast.Inside Edge is inspired by the IPL and all the backroom drama behind it. So we have the Bollywood actress wonderfully played by Richa Chadda desperately trying to save her team and career, Angad Bedi plays the honest and principal Team Captain, Tanuj Virwani the swash buckling superstar, Amit Sial the devil in the team, Siddhant Chaturvedi the young inexperienced one, Sanjay Suri the nice coach with a hidden past and finally Viveik Oberoi the master villain. And to this with a great supporting star cast consisting on Sayani Gupta and Manu Rishi Chadha and you get is an edge of the seat thriller. What I enjoyed the most is that most of the characters are fleshed out. Most of them are grey; some forced to sell the soul to Devil while some trying to runaway from it. Each one is fighting their demon inside and some issue thats challenging them. The show beautifully captures the money and power in cricket and how as Angad Bedi's says the game is run by politicians and filmstars who nothing about the game. How honest cricketers are forced into corruption and how money can be made by one shot or delivery. This show highlights the casteism in team with Sial being the upper caste running down Chaturvedi who is from a lower caste. Each episode ends on an interesting note and there are enough twists and turns to keep you glued. And I loved the last 5 mins of the show..brilliant!! And thanks to the show being on the internet, there is no censorship...so no beep on cuss words and good sex scenes. However, the writing could have been more crisper, Oberoi's character is too cartoonish and sometimes it becomes a bit boring in the middle of the season. Also, the show dialogues move between Hindi and English which left me confused sometimes. The performances are top notch. Richa Chadha is in fine form. Though her English dialogue delivery is poor and I don't blame a bit for her, she covers it with a controller performance. Angad Bedi is a revelation; he needs to do more good stuff after last year's Pink and Dear Zindagi, Suri is seasoned actor and is good in a small supporting role of a man with a troubled past, while Tanuj and Sayani are great in their roles of a heart throb - sex machine - dope smoking cricketer and his cricket analyst sister. However, the stars of the show are Manu Rishi the rival team owner who is brilliant in a small but important role, Sial the corrupted cricketer and Chaturvedi who is inexperienced discriminated but learns to fight back. But the biggest disappointment in this lovely series is the villain. Oberoi is a decent actor but the problem here is that he has been giving a cartoonish villain to performance and instead of being subtle, Oberoi just goes overtop. We never get to know who is he, where he is from and who is behind. Pity for Oberoi.Overall a good product and I am waiting for season 2. Hope it remains as good as one.
