jolleyangel It took me a few seasons, but I think these writers definitely have a bone to pick with Christianity. The first preacher was a weirdo who turned into a drunken whacko. The second preacher was a female (and this is 1860?) who was having sex on the side. Then they bring in the Mormons and totally portray them as vengeful murdering crazy's. Every chance they get they're portraying spirituality incorrectly with an overtone of whackiness. I know bishops and pastors aren't perfect, but they're made to look very hypocritical. It's quite sad. My second big issue was their killing off of lily belle. Honestly it's like getting rid of Hannibal of the A-team. She was a very important character, she made a lot of important decisions, there was no replacing her and the show has suffered. It's definitely less meaningful as it was just barely getting exciting with her and Bohannen.Third issue. Bohannen, the main character starts out as having a strong moral character which you're always so happy when he makes good decisions, because you wind up liking him more and more, but very slowly they have him do things you wish he hadn't. And eventually you wind up asking yourself, why root for anymore.

mrriveranm I couldn't help but marathon watch this show once i discovered how good it is. As a history buff it kept me wanting more, just to see the hardships those who traveled across the country in pursuit of a new life had to go was amazing to see, the cast and crew really take us into the real wild west in great detail. The struggle that folks overcame to have some basic human needs in the wilderness really sells the story here. Being able to afford a floor for your tent was a big deal, having clean clothes is a big deal, at times problems like these seem dire and contribute to the dialogue that is being woven. Great work

smpl_mn The story of a man's man, construction of a railroad connecting the US, East to West. Cullen Bohannon, an 1800's confederate soldier in a new world. What's he good at? Building railroads, fighting with a gun and without, doing what's right for the time as he sees it. He's a torn hero, but a true hero nonetheless. His compassion for people that he sees as true friends is enormous. You want him on your side. Anson Mount knocks this part out of the park. The series centers around him.There were many outstanding characters in the show. Thomas Durant (Union Pacific RR), Collis Huntington (Central Pacific RR), and John Campbell, the first governor of the Wyoming Territory. The character of Eva was wonderfully portrayed. A girl captured and imprisoned by Indians in early youth that seemed to accept her fate with unbelievable strength. The role of Eva is loosely based on the true story of Olive Oatman, similarly captured by Indians, who lived with different tribes for many years before her return. Psalms and Elam Ferguson, both friends to Bohannon, were tough workers and leaders. The list could go on and on, great acting in parts of characters that weren't altogether likable or admirable, but outstanding portrayals no doubt.The story is a series based on a truly historical event. Building of the transcontinental railroad has in some documentaries been characterized as an achievement not unlike putting a man on the moon.For brevity, I'll stop there...I hope you enjoy the show and the spoilers herein will not take away from anything! The story is complex, gritty and exciting...a western applicable to the time.What would I have changed and why don't I give it a 10? Writing, though A grade fantastic, could have focused on some different issues. At times the writers expanded what could have been in one episode into two or three. Too much exposure to "the swede"...got so tired of seeing this despicable character. After they established his presence and effect, they could have had fewer episodes with him in it. Maybe it's about format and time-slotting, but I would have liked to have seen more two hour episodes. In so many cases I felt cut short when the show ended in 45 minutes of actual air time.

nate-car I have a fan theory that this is the OFFICIAL but secret prelude series to the greatest show of all time- 'Deadwood' and that when the train line reaches the town, the two shows will merge, they are both so similar in tone and quality, and both set in the almost exact historical time period.Smart, dark and gritty with moments intelligent humour, 'HOW' leaves me wanting more and wanting to live in this period despite the horror and deprivation.'Bohannon' is the sort of character, that empires are built on, I hope this show ends when the tracks arrive at Deadwood, and begins as- 'Deadwood Season 4' with a combined cast of the two shows.
