Good concept, poorly executed.

It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.

It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.

I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

Positive:
A few of the crimes and subsequent misleads and then problem solving were a bit unique and thoughtful.
Negatives:
1. Many of the crimes and misdirects are redundant, seen before, misleads w/final denouement quick and often anti-climatic.
2. Dialogue is often artificially abrasive w/a lot of "put-on airs" self indulgence.
3. Basic non-crime portion of the scripts are typical love life, social & personal dramas. Seen before!
4. Now for the worst: The detectives' first handling of crime scene items in bare hands and placing important evidence into a handkerchief or pocket has been a no-no since the late '20s in detective forensics at which point a murder kit of rubber gloves, plastic sterile evidence bags, etc. was first introduced.

Inspector Morse was just about the best show on tv but I love Endeavour even more. The character is like Morse but younger, a little bit naive and learning his way around. The ability to see through mysteries is just as good but more characters in the show gives you a better look at the character of Endeavour Morse. I could watch this show every week, if only they could produce them that fast.

I had only watched a few of the original "Morse" series episodes, so was not sure what to expect when "Endeavor" appeared. What I found was a visually stunning and wonderfully crafted period piece, with an exceptionally engaging cast and story lines that were wonderfully convoluted and absolutely entertaining. "Endeavor" has earned a place in my "all time favorites" of television.

As a stand alone series it is very good. But for us to believe this young self effacing polite pleasant detective will evolve into the irascible curmudgeon portrayed by John Thaw is a very illogical transition. The young Morse could hardly be capable of more warmth and empathy. The Morse of middle age seems to barely tolerate anyone or anything outside of a a cold pint and a German Opera!
