Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

I think we need more movies that embody the values of people who follow their conscience and do what's right for themselves and others. Call the Midwife is a fine example. Nonatus House is a convent for a group of Anglican nursing sisters in the east end of London, post World War II. Sister Julienne, the sister superior, is played by Jenny Agutter who brings us an example of discipline softened by love for her community of sisters and caring for the neighbourhood they serve. The narrator, whose voice is that of Vanessa Redgrave, describes her life at the house before she chooses to marry and take up family life. At one point we see her as an elderly woman at home in the present. Her writing is beautiful and describes the values they lived by. Judy Parfitt is Sister Monica, who often becomes a counsellor to the younger nuns, patients and friends in the community. Although afflicted by dementia, she speaks truth in confused situations. Her zest for life can be the spark that gives hope and takes others out of an often tragic world. The minor characters and the neighbours provide their own stories, like the thalidomide babies or the loss of babies and mothers in childbirth. We also see how the Nonatus nuns cope with poverty and failed marriages among the women who come for help. The improvements brought by government medical care are shown as the series evolves. Changes in the cast and their personal lives also reflect reality. We do not view plaster saints but for the most part, people with the same hopes and dreams as everyone. They are flawed but their best instincts usually prevail. It is good for us to view the hardships that life can serve up and see how good people come to terms with severe setbacks in a hopeful and positive way. It is truly inspiring.

It is a rare gift to watch a show that combines captivating story lines, excellent acting, and relevant themes... along with stories that deeply touch the heart. I am struck by the ways in which compelling stories are met with compassion, without shrinking away from the realities and implications of what happens in human life. A big thank you to writers, directors, producers, and actors... not only is your work incredibly good, it is work that matters. Work with heart and soul and power. Bravo. One of the best shows ever, anywhere.

Despite the deviations from the original book by Jennifer worth I truly enjoy watching this programme. As a midwife myself I find it really difficult to watch any TV show that portrays pregnancy and child birth due to the often inaccurate and unlikely events that unfold. Call the midwife is the only programme I can watch that portrays childbirth without shouting and screaming at the TV wishing the researchers had put more effort in.spoiler alert :- The show highlights not only the difficulties faced by maternity services in the 50s but also the development and progression of services with the introduction of the NHS and the move away from home birth and towards hospital deliveries. The deliveries are mostly realistic and show many complications that women face that just aren't written about in other TV shows such as inverted uterus, eclampsia, still birth and babies born with abnormalities. The characters are endearing and the story lines have often left me in tears of sadness and joy. Each episode is an emotional roller coaster. A real pleasure to watch.

I loved the seasons 1-2-3- I don't like season 4 It not accurate in small things and I find this annoying One can think that modern day's look on things have set in the series. The time the series are covered where a time where everyone smoked everywhere. In all public buildings and rooms I know I was young then. Now in this series though season 1-2-3 where accurate in season 4 it is political correctness that wins. If you make a period drama at least the conditions should be right. Also some furniture is definitely not 50ies and 60ies . It is shame that correctness is political. You cannot like it now But that doesn't mean you can alter history .
