A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

What is incredible is this whole Magag character. Star Trek utopianism has always been about the fantasy of equality. The aliens were always analogies for races, particularly the purported black/white conflict in America. Now in 2018, with so many Asians and Hispanics, this 1960s message means very little. But what is odd is their "bad guy" is much worse than say, Klingons. They are veritable vampires who not only feed on humans but imbed their fertilized eggs into them. I'm unsure how anyone could watch this show and take the hilarious platitudes seriously. Most would say, exterminate them. The Nietzschean is an odd concept, particularly today when CRISPR technology is being used to actually genetically engineer humans. I'm not quite sure Nietzsche himself would believe genetic engineering is a good thing, with that whole overcoming thing he digs. There was a time in the 1960s leftists associated Nietzsche with Hitler, who never got around to implementing a eugenics program. That's funny too as them Nazis called it the Indiana Plan, after the very thorough eugenics program there. But I digress. Whoever wrote the initial plot, and I doubt that was Gene Roddenberry, did not understand Nietzsche. Overall, a mediocre show from another era. I don't think it would be very popular in today's multicultural world as the 1960s propaganda and Nietzschean philosophy will be unclear and most everyone would want the Magog exterminated.

Someing fighting ernestly to recreate the mythical Federation works so much better than showing us this "wonderful" future that ends up looking bland and just like the everyday.
Andromeda provides HOPE in a way none of the more mainstream ST ever do.And, yes, it changes after a few seasons because it _has_ to, because if he actually shows us the the thing complete it becomes as dull and lifeless as the other rocks. To keep the potential hope of the Federation it _needed_ to just stay an ideal that they didn't show us because they cannot possible show anything that would connect as a good possible future to fight for. They can show us the hope, but they can't show us the endgame itself and i'ts really good that they realised that and didn't do it, moved on to other stories, because by then, after we got the original point, it became about the characters that we'd gotten to know. So, yeah, it changes, but it's still great, you just change what you are looking for in it along the way.(And why are you looking for the same story 5 seasons in? That's ridiculous. If you just want comfort food watch Original Flavour ST instead.)

Andromeda is a series that was created through a compilation of Gene Roddenberry's ideas and, mostly, of Robert Hewitt Wolfe's ideas. The premise was excellent: a transgalactic utopian society the All Systems Commonwealth (something like a transgalactic version of the united federation of planets) falls because of betrayal and brute force and 300 hundred years later an ex-commonwealth officer who survived trapped in the event horizon of a black hole together with a diverse crew tries to reestablish the commonwealth and end the "dark ages". Is it possible? how it can be done without compromising the values you represent? One plus of the series was also the magnificent starship Andromeda which was sentient! Unfortunately the series never lived up to its premise. The first season and the first half of the second season were good with a good two part pilot , some decent and interesting episodes and the excellent "Angel Dark, Demon Bright" . But from the beginning the series tended to be a little campy and with much mindless action. When Wolfe left the series in the middle of the second season the story arc was gradually abandoned and the series deteriorated into "the adventures of captain Dylan hunt" a kind of bad star trek, campy and even cheesy!! In the fourth season they tried to come back to the story line but with many changes and without any coherence. In the fifth season the series was simply absurd! So watch the series up to the middle of the second season but not buy this box set before you see something from the later seasons first. For me this series was a great disappointment: a great premise that was really wasted. The 6 stars are for the first two seasons. For the rest 4 stars.
