Info

The series focuses on an eccentric motley crew that is the Smith family and their three housemates: Father, husband, and breadwinner Stan Smith; his better half housewife, Francine Smith; their college-aged daughter, Hayley Smith; and their high-school-aged son, Steve Smith. Outside of the Smith family, there are three additional main characters, including Hayley's boyfriend turned husband, Jeff Fischer; the family's man-in-a-goldfish-body pet, Klaus; and most notably the family's zany alien, Roger, who is "full of masquerades, brazenness, and shocking antics."

American Dad! Audience Reviews

Lovesusti The Worst Film Ever
Lachlan Coulson This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
Mandeep Tyson The acting in this movie is really good.
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

tiskec ** THIS REVIEW COULD CONTAIN SPOILERS. I RECOMMEND THAT IF THE VIEWER DOESN'T WANT TO HAVE THE MOVIE SPOILED FOR THEM, I RECOMMEND VIEWING THE FILM BEFORE READING THIS REVIEW. THANK YOU. **I think this cartoon just wouldn't be the same without Roger. I thought it was really original to have a story where an actual C.I.A agent (Stan) rescues an alien (Roger) from dissection from Area 51, and gets his life saved by the alien in the process (First Episode). Then, the C.I.A agent Stan stores the "pan-sexual" alien in his attic. That's just too funny. The cartoon is also unique, because Stan's family Steve (son), Haley (daughter), and Francine (wife) tend to live normal lives, besides the alien in the attic and the quirky things that happen. Without understanding of what actually happens in the cartoon, an average viewer would be like "this is unrealistic and dumb." So how is this possible? Well whenever Roger appears in a scene with other people he has a costume on. Again, they look cheesy and it's obviously an alien. What the viewer may not know is that the only ones that see him as an alien in cheesy clothes are Stan, his family, and the viewers. The rest of the people in the show, view him as an actually human. So he's a shape-shift er to people who don't know. Roger refers to his disguises as his personas. This makes it possible for the alien to live among them in their attic. I thought this was very clever, not to mention original. The alien is also extremely "funny"-opinion. All the episodes are funny and have a family life sense to them all, which is what I think Seth was shooting for. All-in-all, this cartoon has a good story-line, well structured characters, good dialog, U.S. Government spoofs, and humor. I really like this cartoon. I would recommend this cartoon to those that are into television animation.
David Roggenkamp American Dad was one of those series that was on my list of things to watch during prime time on Fox; the catch was, I never did get a chance to see it nearly ten years ago, but due to the nature of cable and catching up – I finally did manage to get some of the series. As I watched the episodes, it was definitely better than the likes of the Simpsons and especially Family Guy. By this point the Simpsons had been pretty stale and Family Guy was starting to lose some momentum. Surely the next iteration of what Seth McFarlane can bring out will be better? He delivered.American Dad stars a typical family; born in the US and otherwise observant of US traditions. The son is a poindexter nerd, the daughter is a rebellious hippy, the wife supports her husband – but argues with him frequently; the head of the household does what he can to hold the family together. Kind of sounds similar to the Simpsons, only it is rehashed through a blender and re-pieced together. The family is not necessarily dysfunctional, but it does have it's moments and they tend to find themselves out of the typical plot of the day. American Dad relies on the same token gags in each episode; they tend to play out with the characters' personalities as most of the household finds themselves each caught up in their own lives. There is always a main plot; but each member of the household almost always gets their own subplot, save for the few times they are altogether, or when a character is missing altogether. One member of the family; an alien, is also a token character that gets his fair share of screen time. Not only does he have more charm about him than other characters, he is the one that is usually cracking dumb jokes and other inappropriate comments. He serves as the show's comedy relief and otherwise often acts as an antagonist that gets the rest of the family caught up in their 'misadventures'. When he is not the one directly responsible, he is often in the midst of their problems and helps them find their way out of it. His claim to fame when not using his wares of knowledge and experience, is his multiple lives and personalities that he has lived, and continues to live through the many guises of costumes that he adorns himself with. The alien is easily the most obnoxious or the best character depending on the plot; he often makes or breaks the episode, so to speak. Most of the plots revolve around the family at large. Banter that occurs frequently is just the icing on the cake; most of the episodes are daily life problems and other struggles that many of us are familiar with, have heard of, or know as a stereotype. This show literally lives through clichés and stereotypes making it very easy to relate to. When not following common tropes it tends to follow urban legends and other forms of American culture through satire. The show can be quite disgusting at times if you've seen it for any regular length of time; I do not recommend it in marathon runs or binges – it is best drawn out over time. The show is not afraid to use violence, blood, gore, sexual references and any manner of crude humor. Unlike "Family Guy" what goes on in American Dad tends to be just a bit more tasteful and done with a good reason. If someone is maimed or gored, it is either because of the current plot of the day, or due to the fact they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Rarely does the show resort to blood and gore for the sake of shock value; more often it is part of the plot itself. The show is not necessarily a step forward in adult entertainment; but it does raise a different bar of quality not normally seen in shows of this type. Adult cartoons are nothing new; but they are also far from common. I recommend this one over others due to how it portrays character, sticks with multiple plots per episode, and otherwise follows American culture.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/? p=9883).
Danny American dad! the show that makes Clevalend I didn't laugh once. It wasn't funny at all. Stan was just was just cruel. Roger was racist, let's not forget the stupid sex nerd Steve. Seth, why would you make this TV show anyway. I like Family guy and the Clevalend show. The Cleveland show was much more funny than this. The whole TV show was just dumb and mean.it actually offended me and my family. I am disappointed I thought at first that this was a funny show and I didn't understand why the Cleveland show was so bad. This should've gotten 5.6 rating. Oh and let's not forget haley. The daughter of the abusive father Stan. And the wife Francine he also sexually abuses. Seth MacFarlane, family guy and the Cleveland show are funny satire shows. This show sucks, there is no humor, and it's racist. I'm disappointed.
