The Stranger Audience Reviews

GamerTab That was an excellent one.
Lawbolisted Powerful
FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Aneesa Wardle The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
persianlax Before watching this I did some research and learned this was a more mainstream and traditional attempt at movie making by Welles, however I can still pick up all his signature techniques and styles and thought it helped make this classic noire film shine and really be a hidden gem. Unique camera angles and clever lighting. Welles possess this larger than life screen presence that we have grown accustomed to, even when his film threatens to lose credibility, by becoming too extreme or unbelievable, the dialogue or plot becoming almost too extreme or unrealistic, his masterful acting and directorial grasp keep it steady and the audience glued to the screen making it still very believable story Great cinematography, the use of shadows really makes this thriller better than the average classic. What really is signature Welles is the tension and thrilling of a story it is. You know what the good guy and the bad guy are planning, but you don't know who's going to act first, or who's going to get hurt when they do. At any moment you are waiting for a confrontation and after every tense scene you figure it is time where true identities will be revealed. The ending was suiting to, I thought to get impaled by a sword on a clock tower and to fall to his death was a suitable death for the Nazi
Jessie Blaze The film has an interesting theme with dark, multi-dimensional characters which makes this an entertaining film. What could have been a well-crafted and intriguing suspense mystery however, is weakened by the overly simple plot and poor editing in places. Simple plots are normally something I support too. The beginning starts with a lot of promise and sort of gives out halfway through. The film almost seems like a failed imitation of an Alfred Hitchcock film (in terms of attempt at suspense)Despite this, the movie is still worth watching if you have some free time.
jrich-37411 In my opinion The Stranger starts out slow, but then eventually becomes more intriguing over time.It takes place after World War II. Throughout the whole movie the characters are in a search to find a former Nazi who is hiding out in a small Connecticut town. This Nazi has completely changed his identity so they are using the only information they have, which is his passion for clocks, to try and find him. This is definitely a film noir marked by the fatalism that occurs in the movie. Towards the end of the film the suspense continuously builds up, resulting in exciting ending scenes.
blanoue324 Orson Welles master in his art of movie making made this movie using many of his techniques from Citizen Kane. The entire movie is filled with the use of shadows. It makes everything very dark and hidden much like the character Orson himself plays. Orson Welles also uses mirrors extensively allowing us to see two peoples reactions at the same time. Its one of those odd techniques that Orson excels and it seems he likes using them. Orson also uses clock as a motif throughout the entire movie because Franz Kindler has an obsession with clocks. The use of music really drives the scenes. It affects your feelings more than you even realize. What happens throughout makes you wonder why he would do the things he does. He murders his old friend, his dog, attempts to murder his wife. However when you realize he was a Nazi you can understand that he is nuts and nothing he does is rational. Edward G. Robinson as the detective was an excellent choice. Orson seems to attempt to explain the rationale of the Nazis and he shows how their views eventually collapse. Orson Welles made another very complicated and well written film but it wasn't as big a hit as Citizen Kane was.
