Excellent but underrated film

If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.

My girlfriend and I borrowed "The Singing Forest" from the library because the DVD cover is two guys in Nazi uniforms making out, but the movie takes place entirely in modern times, they weren't Nazis anyway, and that scene never happened. In many scenes you can't hear the dialogue over traffic outside or the waves at the beach. Also, the next-door neighbor seems to have a dog. Judging by the dialogue we could hear, I don't think we were really missing anything groundbreaking anyhow. I don't recommend that anyone watch this movie for any reason. "The Singing Forest" has zero entertainment value in that it wasn't hilariously bad, it was just bad.

I recently saw this film and really enjoyed it. The story is good and definitely worthy of a remake for large mass consumption. The themes of reincarnation and gays in the holocaust, within other themes, are explored here. I think the filmmaker did a good job with whatever the low budget he was dealing with, but I do think in the same hands with a larger budget and star this story could really have an impact because it touches on so many human aspects of topics that are not touched upon during the holocaust massacre. After seeing the film twice, the story is told from Christophers point of view and Im wondering if the character, we know he's in a deep depression, is not borderline bi polar or with multiple personalities or some mental illness since we see a lot of his reality and what may very well be fantasy being mixed in his own perception of reality. Just something to think about. I also love the performance by Craig Pinkston - the Ben character. I looked him up here but I could not find any other movies by him. Does anyone know if he has done anything else. I think he's very talent and carried his role well and would like to see him in other film if they are out there.

Watching "The Singing Forest" is like reading a poem. It is very allegorical and experimental yet very artistic. There is deeper meaning to the naked eye which is what I like about this film. There is depth and an underlying sense of grief beneath the surface. I totally got the Destiny allegory. If in your mind, you were to take her out of the picture, it would seem like both men are interacting with one another therefore demonstrating the idea that Destiny "the spirit" is what brings both these two old souls together. There is an element of fairy tale happening here...a dark fairy tale. The message I got from this film is what reality is subjective and a product of our experiences. For those who spent the entire film focusing on the technical difficulties the film may have had, I think the message of the film has totally escaped you and therefore you obviously did not "get it". To those more open to artistic expression and looking into the deeper meaning behind this work, you will find a refreshing and original story. For those interested in the filmmakers earlier works, in the DVD extras there are several clever and astute shorts. I especially loved the music throughout the film.

I'm sorry, but I think intercutting some of the most gruesome Holocaust photos with your own amateurish footage in order to order to highjack some emotional impact for your plot is inexcusable. Everyone should see those images, because the create a visceral understanding of the enormity of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. But the way they are used here so gratuitously cheapens them, and cheapens the memory of the victims.I watched the whole movie, trying to make allowances for the low budget, the learning process, and overall naiveté, but I just became more and more annoyed. Every scene in this movie seems to be trying to wrench significance out of every word and image, and it just isn't earned.
