zkonedog When it comes to horror films, sequels are usually very dangerous propositions (just look at the Halloween or Saw franchises). Fortunately, director Hideo Nakata follows the original "Ring" tale with another frightening, mind-bending tale. For a basic plot summary, "The Ring 2" sees Rachel (Naomi Watts) and Aidan (David Dorfman) on the run from the ghost of Samara. Of course, just when they think they are in the clear, the spirit of the long-haired little girl returns to wreak more havoc. While trying to put an end to Samara once and for all, Rachel must delve even deeper into her past to find the key to her destruction. This movie is really a tale of two halves. The first half falls a bit flat because it is basically an extension of the original (visits from Samara, exposition about the haunted videotape, etc.). However, the second hour of the movie redeems itself by delving into more original material, that being the origins of Samara. By that time, the sheer creepiness of Samara was starting to get a little thin, so an origins tale was a good idea.Overall, "Ring 2" is a very satisfying sequel that breaks new ground while still managing to provide some genuine new scares. If not for a bit of a repetitive first hour, this part two would have eclipsed the original.
Python Hyena The Ring 2 (2005): Dir: Hideo Nakata / Cast: Naomi Watts, David Dorfman, Elizabeth Perkins, Sissy Spacek, Simon Baker: Ridiculous sequel to the 2002 hit beginning with a pointless sequence that bears nothing to the rest of the film then journalist and single mother Naomi Watts springs into action when she realizes that the cursed videotape is responsible. Pretty much the same as before with Watts entering her T.V. to confront the woman in the well. Frankly, I wish she had of entered the screen and replaced the images of that of a better film. If she really desires to see something horrible on the tube then perhaps she should subject herself to some of the crap I've witnessed in movie theatres over the years. Directed by Hideo Nakata with production visuals being the best aspect. We witness fine visual elements, much of which is done from the first film, therefore seeing it here is really unnecessary. Watts brings nothing new to her role while David Dorfman as her son is truly laughable. Why the close-up of him eating a sandwich and making a stupid face? Elizabeth Perkins and Sissy Spacek are both capable actresses wasted in cameos. Simon Baker has the thankless role of Watts's boss. The Ring certainly had its flaws but it was a far cry superior to this mess. The only scary aspect is that someone thought it was a good idea to make it. Score: 2 / 10
Rickting We all hate pointless horror sequels but this one was inevitable. Instead of carrying on the storyline, it opts into some laughably possession story which could have been a kid's spooky bedtime story. With a good cast and a talented director, this one doesn't have anywhere to hide. It's scare kit is: CGI, bad lighting, a camera with a broken zoom function, confusion, exposition, a whole load of water, a Spider-man like finale, backstory, badly rendered CGI ghosts which are shown far too much, endless glitches and- most mysteriously- a herd of CGI deer but unfortunately the film is very rarely even remotely scary. The first Ring was bad, but this manages to make it look like Citizen Kane. Hideo Nakata does his best with the visuals, but it's not creepy enough and the story is a total flop. Mixing backstory and failed scares with no coherence or proper explanation, this is a confusing, scare free mess which deserves to have every copy thrown into the well.Naomi Watts was a good heroine before, but she's not compelling here, while every other character portrays a walking cliché, especially the irredeemably bland Sixth Sense creepy child rip-off that the main ghost is trying to possess. Samara herself is reduced to an overused CGI blob that loses what little menace she had in the first film. This is a confusing, badly edited and laughably unscary sequel which suffers from a general lack of effort from its cast, crew and especially the writers. The film is yet another horror film which doesn't understand that subtlety and build-up are key and the scares start flowing right from the very beginning, making the film ever more messy and structurally broken. The whole film can best be described as one massive glitch and most viewers will find themselves bewildered, bored and most likely asleep.1/10
