AshUnow This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.

Dunham16 An extremely well photographed, edited and cast exotic romance,it holds your interest for the entire 103 minutes yet only certain facets, such as the urgency of the monsoon photography and some particularly compelling scenes for Myrna Loy and Maria Ospenskaya truly offer memorable movie going. The plot line of flawed characters arriving in an exotic land to then redeem themselves in grace may seem dated today,but was fairly popular in many melodramas of this Hollywood era. This aspect is done well but certainly no better than in other films of the time period. Definitely worth owning the DVD if this era of Hollywood is your bag, but is not the truly finest work of a Hollywood year spanning GONE WITH THE WIND and REBECCA.

GManfred Gosh, I'm soaked. That was some storm scene in "The Rains Came". Not only was there a rainstorm, it was compounded by an earthquake and subsequent flooding all over the place. Luckily it was only a movie and lucky for this movie, which was moving at a snail's pace until the storm. Beforehand, some of Hollywood's most dependable actors had been trying to move things along. There was Tyrone Power, George Brent, Myrna Loy, Henry Travers, Jane Darwell and the great Maria Ouspenskaya, just to name a few. I guess director Clarence Brown was trying to duplicate the pace of life in hot, stifling India, which necessarily must be slow.Then came the deluge. After some terrific flood footage, which earned the picture an Academy Award,the film becomes a soap opera, which normally turns me off. But this was different, it was absorbing and interesting, especially the dialogue between Power and Myrna Loy. The picture eventually becomes the property of Miss Loy, who gives one of her best performances while avoiding hysterics and descending into bathos.I thought this pulled the film out of the ordinary and eluded becoming another study in tedium and triviality. It was a good picture and I am glad I saw it. I never took a movie course, but I really appreciate watching professional actors acting their guts out.

rosyrnrn Think of the year - 1939. It was 'THE' year for Hollywood with all the great movies that came out. But the utmost highest quality of the special effects in this movie had me spellbound. You must watch it and try to absorb the enormity of the effects required while still being pulled into the story line. The actual story showcases the messy relationships and personalities experienced in real life. You see, the really great movies do not need showings of sex, cursing, or intentional violence from man against man. The really great movies are eloquently written and offered without defilement - so different from most of the movies of today.Enjoy every minute! Myrna Loy - in a dramatic role so different from the Thin Man jovial series! With aloha ~ KonaRose

Chris Gaskin The Rains Came is one of several disaster movies that were made in the 1930's and I found this quite good.An aristocrat returns to India from America and he helps out some poor people in a village. He falls in love and then disaster strikes, first flooding after days of continuous heavy rain, an earthquake and then plague which kills many. He manages to survive all this though.The special effects are quite good for the time and one of the best sequences is the dam bursting.The cast includes Tyrone Power (The Mark of Zorro), George Brent (Dark Victory), Brenda Joyce (who went on to play Jane in some Tarzan movies), Myna Loy and a pre Dr Watson Nigel Bruce, who plays an ill tempered Lord.This movie is worth a look at if you get the chance.Rating: 3 stars out of 5.
