morrison-dylan-fan Reading up about the Cinéma du Look movement,I found out that along with Luc Besson and Jean-Jacques Beineix there was a third director, whose name I had not previously connected to Look. Taking a look at Leos Carax's credits,I discovered that one of Carax's titles was the most expensive French film ever made! (at the time) Which led to me getting ready to join the lovers on the bridge. The plot:Using what little cash he makes as a street performer on booze and drugs,Alex lives homeless on the Pont Neuf with old timer vagrant Hans. One day on the bridge,Alex discovers a new person sleeping rough.Going to meet the new stranger,Alex finds out that the new person on the bridge is Michèle,an artist who is going blind. Swept up in the energy surrounding the bridge,Alex and Michèle soon fall for each other.Becoming dangerously obsessed with Michèle,Alex starts to think of ways to make Michèle his own prisoner on the bridge.View on the film:Handling the biggest budget for a an offering from the movement,writer/director Leos Carax & cinematographer Jean-Yves Escoffier conjure up moments of pure Cinéma du Look magic blazing the sky and water in pulp colours as ultra-stylised tracking shots fully display the remarkable set.Focusing on the "alienated youth" of Cinéma du Look, Carax gives the tittle brittle edges which open up youth hostels and also whips up the frenzied romance between Michèle and Alex in decadent whip-pans and razor sharp editing giving the movie an excellent, raw animated atmosphere.Spending most of the film on the bridge, the screenplay by Carax casts a vast odyssey over Alex and Michèle relationship-a relationship which Carax subtly designs to complement each of their flaws, from Michèle gaining full sight at herself and the paintings,to Alex finding an inability to compromise his stay on the bridge.Spanning a period of over 3 years,Carax captures the psychological power play between Michèle (played by a stunningly tough edged Juliette Binoche) and Alex, (played with a real Punk attitude by Denis Lavant)but struggles to build a sense on the passage of time giving a depth to the relationship, due to Caraz threading the romance in an uneven, disjointed manner,as the lovers meet on the Cinéma du Look bridge.
luluzj a little different from the love we all will see in daily life. Like all those romantic TV shows from Korean, love is always in some fabulous house, with hero and heroine dressed beautiful. But this is not.kind of cannot accept those loud laughters of them. It's so weird. Love is selfish, it's not as great a we think is. You'll want to bring your lover to the same stage you're on. Sometimes it's better, but as in the movie, it's worse.French humor, I'll call that like this. They present the most beautiful love in most ugly scene. Dirty faces, dirty clothes, ugly sex with someone irrelevant. Enjoy love, no matter where you are, or who you are.
FilmCriticLalitRao Leos Carax is not a conventional cineaste. His films are a fascinating confirmation of his splendid strength of mind.Les Amants du Pont Neuf was declared mythical by the media even before it had been shot. The film is one of the most beautiful, tender, touching love stories to have emerged from the realm of French cinema. The film also shows the plight of homeless people in a positive light. It has tackled this burning issue in practically documentary fashion.Carax has created a love story in difficult, tough, unusual circumstances.Pont-Neuf denotes evasion for outsiders like Alex,Hans and Michele as it helps them to stay away from daily triteness. It is a dwelling which allows them to live their lives fully:Michele as a painter,Alex as a fire eater.
Falconeer The final film of the Leos Carax trilogy, following Boy Meets Girl and Mauvais Sang. Here is what the art of film making is all about. The story of the doomed lovers who make their home on the Pont Neuf bridge, and who manage to find some sort of escape from their dark realities in each others company, is unforgettable. Denis Lavant, who appears in all three of the Carax trilogy, is great in his portrayal of Alex, the homeless street performer who falls hopelessly in love with a woman, who appears out of nowhere, to search for a place to sleep, and to hide from her own cruel reality. A painter, losing her vision, but still sketching all that she sees at a frenzied pace, as she knows that she soon will be no longer able to see. The film is so over-the-top romantic, as only French films can be. I had to write something here as a reaction to the bad reviews some gave this wonderful film. It actually saddens me that some people just can't see the magic here, and choose instead to take the film apart by challenging "the logic" of certain scenes and parts of the storyline. Searching for logic and plot holes in a film like this is so utterly ridiculous. Personally I don't go for romantic films, as they usually seem so contrived and phony. But "Amants du Pont-neuf" is such a strong film, and so utterly unique. This is an absolute classic of French cinema, and anyone who has a true appreciation and love for film should not miss this one. 10/10
