what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.

This film is for you only if you'd enjoy watching the cast hike for it's entirety.
There's one scene that could be classified as Thriller but it's not as powerful as the critics would lead you to believe. Calling it a Drama is almost even reaching as it's more of a found footage movie without shaky cameras and a scary plot twist ending. Yes, a walk in the woods with three wonderful actors is what The Loneliest Planet is. Now that I've wasted my evening, it's time for bed.

This is a minimalist movie. It is a movie made up of little moments, little facial expressions, simple dialogues. And, of course, "the" event which is pivotal for the movie.Having watched "Force Majeure" before this, I knew what to expect and what to look for in "The Loneliest Planet". I was expecting a movie about the dynamics in a couple, and how this dynamics is easily and severely disrupted by one single event. I knew I had to look for the small details, for the things unsaid, in order to understand and to appreciate the movie. The physical majesty of the mountains, which are always visible in the background, creates a dramatic atmosphere. In this naturally dramatic set, powerful emotions are lived by the two main characters, and eventually by their Georgian guide as well. However, these emotions are mostly lived inside each character: there are no arguments, no fights, no physical expression of emotions; only looks and (some) words.Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Just be prepared, this is not your usual movie. Don't expect elaborate plot twists (aside from that one event...). Expect it to unfold at its own pace. If you approach it with an open mind, you will enjoy it.

This piece of pretentious waffle made me wish the "The Tree of Life" was showing next door, just so I could use the eye of my penis to tunnel a path through the walls and watch something that in comparison, was a bloody great movie (and I hated it!!)...Why do I need to give it even 1 star? Clearly the film maker smoked one too many dried toads during the production of this one. Who do I contact to get my $18 and 113 minutes back...And where was the intriguing and secret plot twist??? The only twist associated with this movie was the one created in my stomach that made me want to spew all over the large screen the moment the screen when blank and the credits started to roll. It's pretty rare in cinemas to see people walk out mid way through, but it happened more than once. I suspect, like me, the only reason the entire cinema didn't spill into the streets looking for the first bus to jump under was the expectation that something note worthy would eventually happen. Sadly, the most noteworthy event in our cinema that night was when the guy behind me let one go in his sleep.I'm off to see the Office of Fair Trading - a bit of false and misleading advertising on this one!!!

This is a timeless story of life and death and love. I was sincerely curious to see why the talented Gael Garcia Bernal was playing the role of a quiet yet playful, sensual and adventurous Mexican-American traveling with his girlfriend through Georgia; An hyperactive eccentric, and cultured, red haired eastern European/American. At the beginning of the adventure. you can tell how they are melted with each other, they are sensual and playful. Their bodies find joy in every corner of the trip. Their intentions to travel into the unknown seem to be aligned. After they leave the urban sprawl, nature seems to have slowed their need for sensuality. The director tunes into Nature as well. The respect for long silences, gives the spectator an opportunity to appreciate the slowness and continuum of the ecosystem. The water, the erosion, an abandoned old house, the sound of a rock falling down the hill, the change in flora and landscape. This deep silence can be disturbing in the era of constant stimulation and brain noise. The purity of the film's message is appreciated in a time where we are bombarded by cultural biasses and empty dramas. The film allows the viewer to receive a simple yet profound story of life and death. It depicts a multi-cultural journey into the phenomenon of the clash of civilizations. An alegoria of a the hunter-gather phenomena. Of survival of the fittest. Of the need for nurture and human connection. And the present gender and cultural archetypes that are yet present across cultures.
