ChanFamous I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

ethanblum-44656 The directing was sub-par, the music choice was tasteless and horrendous, and the cinematography was subpar at best. The movie left out a plethora of important scenes that were vital to character development and plot advancement, which made this awful excuse for a 'movie' almost impossible to watch. For example, one of the important scenes that was altered is when Ali and Hassan were leaving the house for good, in the book it was construed as an extremely emotional complication with Baba crying and pouring rain. This was important for character development because it was the catalyst in the movie for when Baba's tough, admirable man began to be torn down, with the stories that later surface about his unfaithfulness and deceit. Instead Baba barely fought to keep Ali and Hassan and didn't even drive them to their destination. This was extremely important to character development in the book because it is the beginning for when Baba's character slowly begins to deteriorate in the sense of admirability and without this scene Baba's character is not as affected from the beginning precept of his strong, commendable persona which was all fake. Also, the movie portrays Amir as a victim in the beginning so you start to feel bad for him so his horrendous actions seem less malevolent and you still feel sorry for him because he's construed as a kid with family struggles and neglection issues, when in the book Amir is shown as the wicked monster he truly is. In conclusion, the movie dilutes the characters development and polarizing natures of the different characters so one character doesn't stand out as being a villain, a hero, and other important roles. I give the movie a 1.2 out of 4 compared to the book and a 3 out of 4 as a stand-alone movie.

Peto Barna (trex_daemon) I've discovered the book not so long ago when I was searching for my next book to read. The book itself is a hard-to-put down, once you start reading, so it's no secret that I've really enjoyed the book. Before that, I didn't know much about Afghanistan and it's culture, generally. I wasn't aware that actually there were different nations, like afghans, hazaras or talibs. Shame on me. After finishing the book, I've felt shame that until now, I've considered afghan culture primitive and aggressive. I've discovered that there was actually a movie adaptation recently and by mistake. I wasn't sure I wanted to watch it, as the movie adaptations rarely follow the book's narrative very strictly, and this can upset a lot of people, including me, as they expect to have the same story on the screen as they were told in the book. But in the end I said, let's give it a try. This was one good decision. From the first 10 minutes you can already tell that this will be a great adaptation. The scene (I didn't know back then that it was actually filmed in China) recreated the splendor of Afghanistan before it was devastated by the wars. Amir and Hassan were exactly as I've imagined, even if in my imagination Hassan was the bigger from the two of them. They play their roles marvelously, especially Hassan. Baba's character is also well chosen, faithful to the book. His appearance demands respect, his words denotes that he is a man who knows that in the world all that matters is to respect others and be fair-minded. It's very clear that the directors choose the actors very carefully in order to give life to characters from the book. A lot of people here complained that it's not 100% faithful to the book. I agree with that, but I also would like to add that it's almost impossible to include in a 2 hour movie all the details from a book, especially as this one. Still, the director tried to maintain the details and the story as much as possible and faithful to the book. Yes, in some cases there were minor deviations from the book, but it was there to allow the whole story to fit in a 2 hour movie. Especially the fight scene between Assaf and Amir was slightly modified in de-favour of the book, but this, in my opinion was also done to simplify the story. Also, Sohrab talks in the movie, while in the book he does not. It would have been very hard to explain everything that was written in the book around Sohrab if he was deaf-mute. I do not want to detail all the characters, but they all have played their role perfectly. Overall, this is a very good movie that everybody should watch. There are not so many movies that present so well the afghan people and their culture and recent history. If you have the possibility, do read the book. It's worth it.

jordan_cuzner I felt like I was a watching an extremely fast forward version of the book made by people who made a grade A soundtrack, BUT felt like people didn't deserve to see all the books glory. They left out so many essential scenes from the book and the details as gruesome as they are and the description of people. Giving this movie a seven is high because it was an okay movie but I never once felt happy watching it. The main character made me truly hate him the whole time..the whole movie I never really liked him he just made me angry, while in the book I went from finding him from being a foolish boy to a man who loves his baba and wife and has a strong will. There only glory was Hassan and Baba and even then baba was truly downgraded. The scene where the adulterers get stoned was all wrong and assefs whole well-being was nothing like he was meant to look, like the scene at the birthday party his mother wasn't there and his parents weren't looking scared of there son. They left out so many scenes that could of added emotional depth. I kept watching the movie like is that it. They didn't include Hassan's mother, they didn't make Farrid seem closed off to Amir at first. When assef was starting the fight he didn't tell his guards the facts that if they step out thy are free. They missed so much. I had so much hope for this movie.

Thehagengnome Keep in mind that I have not read the book, so my opinions are not going to include any comparisons or opinions of the book.I gave this movie a 7, and here is the reason. I found the story to be captivating and exiting through a lot of the movie, but sometimes the story just felt dead and boring. The story has a decent amount of depth to it, but that also gets sort of blurred when the movie is reaching it's middle. The characters were decently good overall, even though sometimes some of the characters felt very cliché like. The overall message of the movie is all fine and good, but the drama that really kicks in an hour or so into the movie, really puts me off. The whole drama thing as I said, is way to much for my taste, which ruins the movie for me just a little bit.There are also some parts of the movie that I found to be quite unrealistic, which further brought the movie down for me. Overall the movie has a good concept, but in some areas fails to pull it off. But if you are into middle eastern or drama based films and way of thought, then this movie is definitely worth seeing.
