Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

While not one of my favourites, Ub Iwerks was responsible for a lot of interesting work. Especially when working with Walt Disney, his oldest friend and one of his best, and co-creating one of animation's most famous characters in Mickey Mouse. His career since opening his own studio had interest value but the quality was variable, often being successful in the animation and music but wanting in the story and variable in gags, lead characters and tone.1933 to 1936 saw twenty five cartoons, mostly based on famous fairytales and familiar stories, as part of Iwerks's "ComiColor" series. The "ComiColor" series is very much worth watching and interesting, as is the case with many series some cartoons are better than others but there are no real animation nadirs. 1934's 'The King's Tailor' is decent enough but not great.'The King's Tailor' is slight in the story department with not enough content for the short length and is at times too saccharine and lacking tightness and variety.Its characters should have been more interesting, their personalities are bland generally. The wit and imagination has been more frequent and stronger in other cartoons in the series before and since, there are not enough gags and it can get fairly repetitive. However, 'The King's Tailor' is certainly worth the watch. It isn't too dull and doesn't feel too stale.There are a few amusing moments that aren't too corny and never repetitive, and there is a genuine likeability. The best and most interesting character is the tailor, although the king has the highlight part when he falls into the river, some very clever animation here.Furthermore, the animation is great. Meticulously detailed, fluid in drawing, vibrant in colour and often rich in imagination and visual wit. The music is cleverly and lushly orchestrated, is infectiously catchy and adds a lot to the cartoon.In summary, decent. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Ub Iwerks was a hugely important figure in the history of cartoons-- and much of it because he and Walt Disney created some amazingly successful characters, such as Mickey Mouse. However, in 1930 Ub went out on his own and started his own studio...with less than stellar results. The animation quality was generally good but the stories were very bland...and often hampered by cutesy characters and singing. There's a tiny bit of this in "The Valiant Tailor" but fortunately the singing is very limited and the artwork a step above Iwerks' usual.When the story begins, I found myself marveling at the use of a multipane to create a wonderful sense of 3-D. The Fleischer Brothers managed to make great use of it in some of their cartoons and Iwerks' attempt is almost as good as theirs. As for the rest of the animation, it's also quite good. As for the story, a jerk giant is in the kingdom and is intent on killing the King. But the King is angry at the tailor....and is there any way this simple man can get back on the King's good graces?The cartoon is pleasant and looks nice. However, it's not particularly funny or engaging....and when you think of how Disney handled the same material in "Brave Little Tailor" you realize how ordinary the Iwerks film actually is.

The King's Tailor (1934) ** (out of 4)Outside a couple good animated sequences, there's really not too much to be entertained by in this Ub Iwerks short. The story is pretty simple as a King rips his pants so he goes to a local tailor. Things take a turn for the worse when the pants are fixed but when the King puts them on he's attacked by the bees that crawled in them. The majority of the short has the King running around with the bees attacking but there just aren't any good laughs to be had and there's really not too much entertainment either. The film is certainly far from being bad but at the same time there's no question that there's nothing overly good either. The one highlight is a scene where the King falls into a river and is tossed around by a couple waves that look like hands.

"Irony" might be one way to describe this little fairy tale about a king who has a rip in his pants and goes to a local tailor to get if fixed. Meanwhile, a giant ogre has apparently been terrorizing the town.Fixing the pants, having bees get into the king's pants, having the king trapped in a pond ready to be killed by the ogre and then having the bees come back and get rid of the beast all tie in together in this strangely-compelling cartoon.I didn't find myself laughing at anything in this cartoon, yet it was pretty fascinating. It certainly made me stick with it to see what crazy thing would happen next and how all of this could somehow lead to a happy ending. That ending, by the way, is a nice one but also has a strange element to it (which I won't spoil.) Don't expect laughs, but don't pass this UB Iwerks "oldie" up, either. It offers a very interesting story.
