Best movie ever!

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

A psychological thriller at its best. Rebecca De Mornay is very good as the sweet, sensitive nanny, yet so disturbed at the same time. This is essentially a story about revenge gone wrong. Rebecca plays a woman who poses as a nanny to avenge the woman she believes is responsible for her husband's suicide and her miscarriage as a result of what happened. In the process she tries to take everything from Claire (played by Sciorra). Annabella Sciorra was ok in her role, but the way she used the asthma pumps were just not believable. Anyone and everyone who has or knows about asthma will immediately know the pumps will provide no relief whatsoever the way she handles them. Despite that, this was a very good film.

This movie is, perhaps, one of the most famous thriller of the eighties. It starts well, with a babysitter full of lousy intentions integrating into the bosom of a family she intends to destroy slowly, like a snake that suffocates its prey before killing. The problem is the director (Curtis Hanson) and the screenwriter weren't able to properly exploit the potential inherent in such an issue. There is so much that could be better and more intense! But, instead of a more fearless approach, they preferred to bet on usual thriller clichés and the result is obvious: the film has quality and very good scenes but its generally predictable and warm, never getting to fully fulfill our expectations. The ending is exaggerated and a bit out of place, when compared to the film itself.Rebecca De Mornay is one of the reasons to give this film a chance: the actress truly strives and manages to build a character that perfectly balances purest cruelty with the most angelic appearance we could imagine. She looks like a saint, but she's capable of things that would make the Devil laugh with satisfaction, and that duality makes her very appealing and sinister. Annabella Sciorra is the typical girl in distress and her character seems not to have been so elaborate or to have been thought of as the antithesis of De Mornay's character. I think this strategy didn't work out very well, as Sciorra's character is too flat and empty. Ernie Hudson looks great but Julianne Moore and Matt McCoy have small characters and they haven't had a chance to show real talent.

Terrific tale of the macabre where a woman seeks revenge on another woman and the lady's family. The former was the wife of the doctor and he committed suicide after allegations were made by the latter that he touched her inappropriately during an exam. The widow gets into their lives as the nanny and almost immediately brings havoc to the household, even going so far to create a situation where the woman believes that her husband has been cheating with an old flame, a good friend of the family. The latter is played by Julianne Moore, bringing relish and a strong determination as the feisty real estate agent, who becomes a victim in all this mayhem.A very young Madeleine Zinna, who went on to become known in The Nanny television series, plays a precocious young child who certainly has her wits about her.The gentleman playing the mentally challenged young man aide to the family is excellent and it just goes to show you that he is dismissed after our "widow" plants clothing in his room attesting to a possible inappropriate touching with the young Zinna character.

Michael (Matt McCoy) and Claire Bartel (Annabella Sciorra) take on mentally handicapped Solomon (Ernie Hudson) to build the fence. They have a girl and she's pregnant with their second. She is molested by her new doctor Victor Mott (John de Lancie). She reports him along with other women and he shoots himself before the trial. Mott's pregnant wife (Rebecca De Mornay) loses her family wealth and her baby. Mrs. Mott vows revenge on Claire and becomes her nanny as Peyton Flanders. Claire's friend Marlene (Julianne Moore) warns her as Mrs. Mott wage a secret campaign against Claire. This is probably more scary for parents and especially mothers. This is simply geared more towards that demographic. For others, it needs something more than this straight forward thriller. I think it would be more compelling to start the movie with De Mornay as a mysterious woman. Claire can uncover her history along with the audience. De Mornay is pretty good with a restrained intensity and volcanic outbursts. This is a bit too slow but there is just enough tension.
