Morgan and his friends are on a hunting trip on a remote Canadian island when they are attacked by a swarm of giant wasps. Looking for help, Morgan stumbles across a barn inhabited by an enormous killer chicken. After doing some exploring, they discover the entire island is crawling with animals that have somehow grown to giant size. The most dangerous of all of these, however, are the rats, who are mobilizing to do battle with the human intruders.

The Food of the Gods Audience Reviews

HeadlinesExotic Boring
Stoutor It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
Janae Milner Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
Derrick Gibbons An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
happynhmom I should give this move a "10" simply based on the fact that I remembered watching it when it first came out at the age of 7. This was one of those movies that my mom watched after my brother and I "Went to bed". Little did she know we would often sneak out of bed and peer into the living room where we could clearly see the television. At the point that this movie first showed it's ENORMOUS SIZED animals we were glued to the screen and so enthralled that we couldn't look away. It was only in our dreams that the horrifying scene of the gigantic rats haunted us both again and again. Over the years the nightmares came less and less but the title never left my head...when I just happened to come across this movie that has been tucked away in my mind since I was a little girl I just had to tell you what kind of impact it had on a little 7 year old girls and her 5 year old baby brother. Although the movie is a far stretch from realistic by today's standards back then it was terrifying! Way to go Food of the Gods!!
Lee Eisenberg Bert I. Gordon -- aka BIG -- directed a number of B movies (or sometimes C movies) including "The Food of the Gods" and "Empire of the Ants", both based loosely on H.G. Wells stories. The former depicts a substance that turns animals giant...and then the animals turn against the humans! Nature's vengeance! Watching the movie, I laughed at how atrocious it was. Terrible acting, directing and script, not to mention cheesy special effects. The sort of movie that should have appeared on "Mystery Science Theater 3000". In all fairness to the movie, we do get to see some great shots of the islands off the coast of British Columbia. Aside from that, "The Food of the Gods" is one of the most hilariously bad flicks out there. Ditto "Empire of the Ants".
Tom van der Esch I was quite shocked after watching this movie, to be honest. In a good and bad way, mind you.First, let me tell you the story of Food of the Gods in a nutshell. On an island, a strange goo (I guess) mixed with animal food changes some of the animals into giant monsters. Wasps, chickens, worms and especially the rats turn out to be a real menace. When several people get involved and end up being locked inside a farm, it all comes down to a struggle to survive...Why was I shocked, you may ask? For one thing, there is a lot more gore or at least nasty scenes then I thought there would be in this film. I guess I either underestimated the movie or classified it as the wrong type from the beginning.People get attacked by a lot of critters, but the main enemies are the rats though. People get ripped to shreds. Even though you do not see everything, it still was rather unpleasant to look at sometimes. By today standards, it would probably be nothing to the average gore-hound, but back then I'm sure it would be very scary or even gruesome. But the thing that got me most is the violence the other way; towards the rats. They get shot, punched, chopped and even drown in the end. In particular the final scene was actually very sad. I really hope the film makers didn't use real rats for this footage. Me questioning about this topic does prove that the guys in the visual effect department did a fairly good job.In overall, this is a pretty good movie for it's time. Go check it out if you like movies about (giant) animals attacking people.7 out of 10 stars.
Seb Three friends with big faces go to an island to relax by chasing a deer to death with dogs. There's so many over-sized faces at the start of this movie it's like watching Easter Island statues bobbing around. This merry jaunt is interrupted when some giant wasps kill one of them. This film is full of laughs, most of which come from the unconvincing giant animals. The rats look OK in close up but the giant chicken is one of the funniest monsters I've ever seen and easily the highlight of the entire film.I liked the character development too. They want to show that the businessman is a real typical 70's businessman jerk so there's one line where he stands opening a gate and says "open the god dam gate" for no obvious reason. Granted it's not quite on a par with a giant chicken head pecking at you but it made me laugh all the same. The crazy religious woman is equally subtly sketched with her endless talk of sin. The ultra-hostile "female bacteriologist" is pretty funny too. Check out the bit where her biological clock goes off during a rat attack. Funny stuff. The whole movie is pretty much rats being shot with paint ball pellets while roaring like a tiger and climbing on a dolls house. The basic fact that rats can swim doesn't fit with the ending so there's a clunky scene where we get told that giant rats can't swim. They can't swim OK, and we're not just saying that because we've already filmed the ending before someone pointed out that they can swim. Also, how come there's a dam on an island in the first place? Geography wasn't my best subject but wouldn't that mean the island was lower than the level of the water? If you've seen any of Big Berts other movies you'll know what to expect. Definitely one for bad movie fans only!
