Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

Oh my! Must first say Robert Mitchum is my FAVorite actor of all time! And the most under-rated or the most under-afforded get movie roles! For some reason at that time, maybe his bold nature, he was not considered for some of the great roles of his time. Snobby Hollywood may have given too much notice to his cavelier nature and "pot" smoking. Roles went instead went to Jimmy Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Rock Hudson, Clark Gable, William Holden, Marlon Brando, and the likes. Just take a look at his performances in Heaven Knows Mr. Allison, The Night of the Hunter, Thunder Road, and Cape Fear- to mention a few. The Enemy Below also fits in this group. A most unique war story with a fascinating plot, humanizing both sides of the war conflict. The enemy commander, played by Curd Jürgens, provides such a plausible and compelling wartime story. A war story that does not ignore human nature and respect. I will, as long as I live, wave my flag high and vigorously for Robert Mitchum. A "ONE OF A KIND" man and actor! Would also consider Clark Gable in the same light. God rest their souls and may their memorable movies endure for all time.

Not a documentary, this movie focuses more on the personal interactions between men in a war they have learned to hate...Robert Mitchum is the American Captain of a Buckley class Destroyer Escort, operating independently in the North Atlantic...Kurt Jurgens is the crusty German skipper of a submarine, who has experienced two World Wars. Both of them have felt the horror of war, the utter futility of constant conflict, but both still do their duty...The Enemy Below is a portrait of two men's inner demons, and their struggle to overcome those demons...there is a lot of action as well...Overall, the film brings technically accurate depictions of war at sea, a good bit better than many others...but it is drama, first and foremost, with the accuracies set as the backdrop...This is always well worth watching...

The South Atlantic during World War 2. The US destroyer USS Haynes spots and engages a German U-boat. The U-boat is commanded by Captain Von Stolberg (played by Curd Jurgens), a wily veteran U-boat commander. The captain of the Haynes is Lt Commander Murrell (Robert Mitchum), a Naval Reserve officer who was previously in the merchant marine. Because of this background, some of his crew doubt his abilities. he soon proves them wrong and a battle of wits ensues between the two adversaries. Great WW2 naval drama. Pretty good portrayal of submarine and anti- submarine warfare. Suspenseful and engaging. Also shows a good balance between the US and German sides.Great performances from Robert Mitchum, as the US captain, and Curd Jurgens, as the German captain. Good supporting cast too.

It's a favourite war movie of mine and probably my favourite submarine movie, the action almost non-stop from the start to the finish and not a minute wasted. US Navy ship commanded by imperturbable philosophical captain Robert Mitchum discovers potential Nazi U Boat commanded by sweaty philosophical captain Curt Jurgens on a vital mission to travel in the direction of 140 regardless of where they end up. The battle is on many levels, as well as literally; between the rival capitalist countries, between the rival crews, between the rival captains, and the enemy below the skin that is within the Dark Heart Of Mankind. It's cat and mouse all the way as both sides are intent on their own preservation and the others destruction. And it's all in a day's work as everyone was only doing their jobs in a dirty war – "we try not to get killed, sometimes we are, that's all" comes to mind. The old plot device of the captains' mutual respect blossoming as a result of their gradually perceiving their rivals equal brainpower is both corny and riveting to watch, it's certainly expertly handled. In fact, I'm always surprised to remember that Dick Powell produced and directed this one. It's simply excellent entertainment, and thankfully not high on realism. Personally the real Enemy in the story and in real life was the Enemy Above them all. I'm sure von Stolberg would've agreed their respective Betters were their real enemies back home snuffling their caviar and sipping their champagne who had put all of them in that position in the first place.
