Good movie but grossly overrated

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

This fabulous Roman Empire flick has all that it takes to tantalize. The historical detail is, of course, a complete fabrication. The movie's real power lies in its not-too-over-the-top story-telling. A Roman officer voluntarily posted to super-savage Britain sets out to rescue his father's honor by retrieving a lost legion's standard (i.e. The Eagle).Breathtaking cinematography combined with solid acting makes this movie a cut above the normal sword and sandal affair. Even the obligatory violence is remarkably restrained. All in all, this is sure to delight fans of the "historical" adventure genre.

This movie, as said in credits, is based on the Children Novel by Rosemary Sutcliff, yet with some mayor plot changes.First of all, I must say this is so far the most realistic roman-era movie I've seen, even more real than the gladiator. If you want to learn roman history, just go watch it. You get a battle with roman strategic formations, a realistic villa, also you can see a roman road just as they truly were, higher-leveled respect to the ground, without forgetting hadrian's wall. So, even with some mistakes it's enough realistic.Another thing is the visuals. Very good, these Scottish landscapes (must say that england scenes were filmed in Hungary thoug) really catch you. Even that "shaky camera" effect they used in hunger games makes it quite well instead here. The real problem, that made me take off 2 marks to this, was the fact that you see children being killed. In my opinion that's the very worst thing to include in a movie, together with violence on women, I don't find it acceptable at all.Overall, an enough good movie, good acting and must underline the well-included Celtic music score.

Starts well - a new commander arrives at a military base on the Roman frontier, deals with a bit of insubordination by anticipating an attack, and proves himself in battle. His mission is to restore his family's honour by retrieving the eagle lost by his father in a military disaster. The lead is a bit weak, so he doesn't command respect, but I was looking forward to his quest for the eagle. I expected a picaresque story as the hero headed through Roman Britain, but the director just gave us a map with cod ancient place names and jumped forward to Hadrian's Wall - like entering Mordor-lite.There was an interesting twist, when master became slave, but the story didn't do much with it. Apart from that it was just fantasy, with wooden characters and a bit of gaelic from the Conan-type barbarians. This is history according to the American Marines - sword twirling interrupted every so often with toe-curling sentiments, and at the end a laughterless joke. Also no babes.Interesting idea, bad story. But it looked pretty good, so 3/10.

The Eagle is a good film. I wouldn't go as far as saying it is great, but definitely good. The introduction provides sufficient information to understand what is happening, so you're not confused. There is a good build-up of tension before the battle, and that Briton leaping over the wall certainly made me jump! The battle itself is nice, too; dramatic music, lots of shouting, and of course a lot of fighting. I also like the way they shot the battle, doing little snippets of fighting and death, instead of having entire one-to-one fights which take ten minutes each played before our eyes. The second battle which happens in the morning also gains my approval, for the same reasons. The movie then becomes a little dull, with a lot of talking and shouting, and I begin to wander if this has become a Roman version of EastEnders before Marcus and Esca set off. The movie stays in the same grey state for a while. There is some nice scenery and music, but essentially it is just two people travelling on horseback. Boring. Then the movie gets to the part I have been waiting for. The two adventurers come across a little village full of bloodthirsty warriors, who happen to be in possession of the Eagle. After a bit of sneaking, the adventurers steal back the Eagle but are found, and a small fight ensues. Predictably, the adventurers win, and escape. The people of the village find out about the Eagle being taken, and a long chase begins.Marcus and Esca run for 20 minutes or so (which, in the movie, is a few days) before resting in a small canyon-y thing. Marcus is too exhausted to move and has a sleep. Esca runs off, which leaves the viewer rather puzzled about what he is doing and if Marcus will survive. Predictably, he does, and Esca returns with what is left of the Ninth Legion. There is a small, almost emotional moment, before the bloodthirsty villagers attack, and a dramatic battle begins. The music at this point is very good, and there are some hilarious beards. In the end, the defenders win and take back the Eagle. Rome's honour is restored, and the film ends. So, in short, this film has a good beginning, a dull middle and a dramatic (but predictable) ending. Not that amazing, but still good.
