An Exercise In Nonsense

If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.

This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama

Worth seeing just to witness how winsome it is.

this movie was very surprising in the level of quality it offers, it's story was very unique and the characters were very well developed and acted. which brings me to the actors, they weren't A list or B list actors but were all really good. the effects and general layout of the virtual world were really well designed.final verdict: definitely worth the watch for any action or sci-fi fan.

Gamers will hate this movie. Very poor acting. Script is totally full of mistakes. It is so bad that hard to criticize. Final scene is a disaster. It is very hard to say anything good about this movie. The only thing I liked is the subject of the movie, I hope one day a better director with better players and with a strong script we watch a better version of this movie.

The Call upUsually whenever a movie like this comes along I will give it a wide berth. Low budget, unheard of actors, untested director and a storyline that has potential but you just know it's going to be ruined by the aforementioned factors. The Call up does have an intriguing premise. Especially since the world we live in is becoming overwhelmed with technology and the youth of today would rather play football on a computer than out in a field. The Call up tells the story of Elite gamers from around the world that are chosen to try out a new kind of virtual reality gaming system. It is so advanced it becomes very difficult to differentiate between pixels and pores. The participants are required to adorn futuristic gaming suits that immerse them in a virtual world where they are required to fight there way out of a terrorist infested building. It soon becomes apparent that the game will not let them go and simulated pain hurts just as much as the real thing. With fellow comrades actually suffering and dying for real the remaining survivors battle to stay alive as they realise there's no escaping the virtual world they are trapped in.The Call up is an interesting film, one that suffers from lack of investment. The unknown actors and all involved making this low budget Sci-fi do a decent job with the resources that they have. I do believe that with a bigger budget and slicker production that this film wouldn't have been condemned to late night re-runs on the Syfy channel or demotion to the DVD bargain bin. It's very difficult for an audience to invest when there's a lack of investment from the producers of the film. Special effects are adequate but practical effects, set design and costume design look as though they came from a 1980's B movie. A shame really as this film could have been much better with a little added garnish. By no means skip this movie. Give it a go but just open your mind to what it could have been.

Well shot and composed with good colors and contrast. Appropriate solid special effects and motion graphics, not over the top at all. Yes these are aesthetic observations but aesthetics are important, especially in Sci-Fi. They're also the only good thing I can say about the movie.Horrible acting and a horrible script. I don't know whats worse, the script or the casting. The stereotypes are also poorly written. For stereotypes. All the building blocks were there for something more coherent and edgy. A tighter script with some better casting could have turned this into a cult classic. The missed opportunity is highlighted even more by the solid production work. Unfortunate.
