I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.

"The Aristocrats" is the most obscene film I've ever seen! You'll never see another documentary as horribly graphic in its language, yet so enjoyable to watch! It is a celebration of obscenity, comedy, and free speech. It is edgy, insensitive in every possible way, but that's what the joke is all about. To most people, making a whole film about one joke sounds idiotic, and with almost every other joke, it really is. However, the aristocrats joke is so interesting, and has been told so many times and in so many different ways that you mine as well make a film about it! And they did make a film about it, this film, 2005's "The Aristocrats".We watch comedian after comedian talk on and on about the history of this joke, their own variation of the joke, the joke's possible meaning, etc. And this joke just so happens to be the most ugly, disgusting, and unbelievable joke you've ever heard. It is the ultimate masterpiece of shock value! As you watch the film, listening to these comedians spewing offensive filth after offensive filth, and after a while, I just became desensitized by this filth, and the shock value of these obscenities began to fade away. The same thing happened to me during Stan Brakhage's experimental horror doc "The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes".In that film, we are shown over 30 minutes worth of autopsy footage that Brakhage, himself, filmed. While watching that film I, at first, was disgusted and disturbed by the graphic imagery, but this disturbance eventually turned into the desensitizing of the graphic material being exposed to the viewer. As I said, I had a similar experience with "The Aristocrats", it starts off as being the most disgusting junk you've ever heard in your entire life, but then you just become used to it and accept it. It just becomes...funny. That's what jokes are supposed to be, right! Well, this film is REALLY funny. It is the funniest documentary in recent years, and I'd highly recommend it to anybody interested in comedy. Even if you don't like the joke, you might love the film!

Perhaps it would help to be an actual comic with both raunchy tastes and an insider's appreciation for the underlying 'joke' to have a genuine understanding of this film, but that can hardly explain its relatively high rating here by a much broader audience. I guess there's no shortage of people who enjoy filth, and there are even those who like wallowing in it outright. Just to be clear, I like lowbrow humor; I'm a fan of 'Norbit' and 'Superbad' and all comedy in those veins. 'The Aristocrats' is something of a very different nature, though: it contains the foulest content imaginable – literally, as that's the whole point of the 'joke' – and in a documentary format that immediately becomes repetitive and tedious. There's no accounting for taste, but anyone should approach this time-killer with due caution; you may be exposed to a lot of stuff you'll wish you could un-hear.

OK.. So I get it, its an inside joke amongst other comedians, its about how vulgar you can tell a joke (which really isn't that funny)..After about ten minutes into the movie you have already seen what its all about and the next 80 minutes are just worthless... In fact if I had to watch it again I would just go to You tube and watch the South Park version! Now I like a sick joke and I am not normally offended by them but this joke is beyond me, A joke about child abuse and rape and god knows whatever else is far from funny.I would avoid this like the plague!! Unless of course you like the plague then you might add it to your own stupid version of this joke.I gave it 2 stars because I found the South Park version funny as it really just sums up just how stupid it really is.

A number of posters have commented that this documentary gives insight into the world/mind of the standup comedian. For people who supposedly earn a living by being funny, I was at a loss to understand why anyone would pay to hear any of these people, 90% of whom you've never heard, for obvious reasons. The whole dreary thing is basically a self congratulatory group of people thinking they're being funny, as they all try to top each other with yet another version of an ancient and incredibly unfunny joke. There are a few funny moments, when a comedian actually tells the joke in a creative or unexpected, imaginative way, but those moments are all too rare. Don't waste your time and money on this thing. There are plenty of videos available that actually show people being funny.
