It felt like Shane Jacobson attempted to make an Australian equivalent of an American star-studded comedy. He gathered a odd collection of tired comedians together to tell very boring, predictable one-liners. The idea was so enticing but it was executed so poorly. Firstly the celebrities he used were so dolldrum the novelty wore off a lot quicker than it would have if this had been an American film. Secondly, the jokes were generational and lame. Thirdly, it didn't feel like any of the celebrities were honestly enjoying themselves. The atmosphere was one of being stuck at an awkward family reunion having to listen to your drunk uncle ramble on. The premise was to get "friends" (I use this term loosely- most of the celebrities seemed pained to be there) together to tell jokes- why did they all have to be propped up one liners? Why couldn't there be natural flowing conversation littered with witty observational humour and sarcasm? It felt so rehearsed and forced. Whilst the live music was entertaining the panning from joke to live music to joke to live music made me feel nauseated it was so repetitive. Probably the most tedious scene came at the end when the audience was forced to suffer through a show tune. Nothing says comedy more than a show tune right?

Just saw the rating in the newspaper this morning and thought it way off the mark of what the movie actually is, I was compelled to write what I found the movie to be. It's basically a movie of jokes and music it's very well done with a few of Australia's outstanding joke tellers and well know music identities. It's very Australian and might not work for you if not familiar with aussie. I was very entertained and will be watching it again.

It's a film about people telling jokes and having a beer. Great light entertainment for a Sunday afternoon.

I was so glad I made the effort to see this film despite the awkward screening times over only four days at the cinemas. I found myself laughing out loud in the cinema at some of the jokes, as well as blown away by the superb musical performances captured live on stage. It's not a conventional movie, which is probably why some critics have been harsh, but if you want a dose of great entertainment then give this a try. Includes the best penguin joke ever.
