Good concept, poorly executed.
Allison Davies
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Raymond Sierra
The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

The content is actually a bit hot: a young couple goes into vacations and each one loves and get intimate alone or together with the same woman… Today, it would be an almost porn movie whereas in the 80s, it's like a spicy enchanted experience: sure the movie is lucky to have a young Darryl but we don't see much of her skin and we recall foremost her soft, sweet attitude! In addition, their vacation happens in the most beautiful place for that, Santorini Island! I went there like us, in the summer and really, blue sky, blue sea, white houses are really like paradise! It's filled with great pop songs of the 80s (Johnny & Mary) and the story has the real flavor of those summer loves that never last. So it's really a great movie, just to get out of a dark, bleak daily life!!

American couple Michael Pappas (Peter Gallagher) and Cathy Featherstone (Daryl Hannah) rent a Greek villa for their summer holidays. They are struck by the sexually liberated culture. He's intrigued by archaeologist Lina (Valérie Quennessen) while Cathy does her amateur photography. He tells her about Lina. They test out having outside relationships. Cathy gets frustrated and confronts Lina. Lina turns out to be friendly and they become three best friends and eventual summer lovers. The threesome is interrupted by the arrival of Cathy's mother. This is cheesy 80s fare. It's a little fun and has plenty of nudity. The characters are likable. Nobody is too annoying with too much personal drama. This is basically a guilty pleasure. I have no problem with people complaining about a general emptiness. The acting is basically good enough. The story is better than softcore porn. This is not the highest of dramas.

Watching Summer Lovers made me want to go to Greece. Although Randall Kleiser's Summer Lovers is no Grease or Blue Lagoon, it does have eye catching features and I'm not just talking about it's female leads. The story is basically a twosome interrupted by a threesome, the deceived lover, who soon becomes accepting of the situation, which in the real world, not many of us would come around to this deal. They share some real adventures, including a naked camera shoot for a pop clip, one gay guy, trying to come onto a younger Gallagher. Also we have a few hot menage de trois scenes, as well as them going to a three stooges flick, that's funny anywhere you see it. Gallagher and Hannah are satisfactory, their hot french friend that makes up the mutual love triangle, is actually better, the life of our three performers. Soon our Frenchie feels this deal is cramping her style as her friends start to become frumpy. They always are when you break curfew, staying out all night, free spirit like she is. Peter Cetera's funky end song where the three make the giant plunge from a towering cliff into the sparkling blue sea, made me want to be there so much. Nothing special, though again, I reiterate, this one falls below the standard of the other two I mentioned, as though coming across as a flop. But the movie has great scenery, and some nice sight seeing, if you get my drift. Just don't expect too much, or set your sights higher on a better movie, when next touring the aisles of your local video store.

Now that Peter Gallagher is everyone's favorite TV dad on the O.C., it's fun to see what he did in his younger days. Oh man! Right from the opening credits this movie is like being in a time warp. Does anyone remember when a hit song was written just so it could be the title of a movie? Then I was surprised to hear the old Chicago song closing out the movie when they're all naked and happy again. Hardly a classic, but if you're in your 30's or 40's, you may remember how we all thought Footloose was a good movie back then. Plus, it has a sort of eerie quality since the French chick got killed in an accident in 1989. Here's an idea. Take a vacation with your special someone to the Greek coastal villa where this movie was shot and try some re-enactments of the scenes.
