Good concept, poorly executed.

It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.

oh my... what can i say... i really did try with this one, i like some of the directors other films so i thought i would stick with it... the story begins with a ludicrous scenario where gigolo/hustler/party animal Nikki meets the Anne Heche character at a party... she of course just happens to be a highly successful lawyer with a dream apartment... oh and no partner or children of course... or even friends or so it seems! within a few minutes he's charmed her and is driving her and her car back to the luxury apartment for a night of hot sex etc... and so begins a relationship based on need/lust/desire between two empty vapid people... the story continues with lots of flashy snippets of the couple having sex and as usual for films of people who live in these dream show apartments, everything is always clean and immaculate, the fridge is always full, the bathroom always has fresh towels, the pool is always clean and not full of leaves... i could go on but lets just say watch it yourself and find out does the player get played or does he have a heart after all? and much more importantly will you even care!

I read about this movie in a men forum and I was expecting it to be sort of a PUA guide type movie, but it turned out to be more than that. The movie is about one young attractive chap that finds itself in the loop of sex and party lifestyle in LA and his way out of that.As soon as the movie started, I was pleasantly surprised by the image technique used, as it instantly gave me the feeling of nostalgia and homesickness. You can tell that this movie is about feelings just by that, and if you are not open to that, you are not going to like it.The character, Nikki, which basically lives off having sex with rich women, eventually finds that this is not a way to live, as his only real friend abandons him after having enough of his arrogant behaviour. Him, being detached from his feelings from years of a heartless lifestyle, can't demonstrate appreciation to people, and specially love isn't in his agenda. And against all odds he actually falls for this one girl who he connected with in the weirdest way possible, and that is the beauty of it.The reason why I liked this movie so much, is that it gives you an insight of how different styles of life are, how the mind of the person works, how he got drawn into that and how he develops and grows throughout the movie. And specially because I could relate to it, in some way. People who have been through a lot of change in life will relate too, because this movie is about that.It is not a movie just about sex, like I read in some comments. Yes, it does have some sex, I'm sorry that you can't watch this next to your 12 year old, but that doesn't make it a bad movie just because of that. The sex scenes are there for a reason, and it is to better express how his life is centred mainly on that in the early stages of the movie. The ending killed me, but it is real. I would rather have it the other way, but it is not always like that. If you appreciate the rest of the movie, the ending will just slap you in the face, like it did to me.The acting is very decent. The main complaints that I've heard is that Ashton was not very good expressing feelings - this shows that you've not been paying attention - the character is meant to NOT express real feelings at all, its the basis of his life style. So the fact that Ashton didn't express feelings well, its great and fits perfectly with the character. The first time that he actually felt some sort of real feeling, it was awkward, and that's how it's supposed to be lol. The main characters, Ashton and Margarita Levieva, were great, and their relation warmed my heart. The scenes were excellent and the shooting is very well achieved. My advice is watch it. It isn't a movie with a huge budget and I wouldn't call it an Oscar movie obviously, but a movie that will make your feelings flourish and come to your skin, if you have any.

After reading a few reviews, I expected this movie to be a mildly pornographic rom-com. As the credits scrolled, however, I was surprised to find that this movie was not only well made and well casted, but the story behind well thought out too. Although some aspects of the story were clearly unreal (like the glamour and ease with which Ashton Kutcher picked up women), I thought that some things portrayed in Spread were rather accurate. One idea, which Nicky (Kutcher) mentions several times, is how people run to LA to pursue their dreams- but how the reality is that nothing is quite as magic as it seems. Most movies, having been made in Hollywood, would not necessarily incorporate this into the story. But this movie daringly features not only this but other controversial issues, and is therefore quite thought provoking. On the surface I can see why people thought the scenes of sexual nature were unnecessary, but really, the sex was part of the story. It was showing what Ashton Kutcher, who plays a gigolo, did to survive. And it showed how meaningless it all way for him. Overall I really enjoyed this film, and think that it carries a much deeper meaning than one would presume.

I thought this movie to be a comedy, as it was labeled such, so I was sort of waiting for a movie to make me laugh. The movie "Spread", however, is not really a comedy, more like a drama. But it wasn't a bad movie at all.The story was nice, and it was a story that you easily could get yourself into and follow it. The story was going forward at a brisk pace and you wanted to see where the story would take you. I like the aspects of human behavior and how we treat other people and how it was portrayed in the movie. The director managed to hit that one straight on the head. The cast in the movie was good. Ashton Kutcher did a good work as the lead role of Nikki. He has that boyish charm to him, and that worked well in this particular movie. But, the one carrying the movie would be Anne Heche in the role of Samantha. She did a phenomenal job in that role. I am not usually a big fan of her, but in this movie she was brilliant. And the chemistry between her and Nikki was really well acted out in a believable and good manner. And Margarita Levieva, playing Heather, was also quite good, and this is the first time I have seen any of her work. Now, what didn't really go well with me was all the sex scenes. Well, I know it was important for the movie, but I just found it a bit too much. There was too much focus on those scenes, and I found it a tad over the top. But hey, I wonder if the movie would have been the same had they left them out. So just a little heads up for those haven't' seen the movie yet, there is a lot of adult situations in the movie. The movie did get around a couple of interesting questions along the way. And a movie that leaves stuff for afterthought is one of the better kind of movies, entertainment and debatable at the same time. However, for me, this movie is not the type of movie that has enough value for a second viewing. It is watched once, then bagged and tagged.
