As Good As It Gets

The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

A reporter is kidnapped by the Taliban resulting in the Special Forces taking a trip to Afghanistan to get her out. Things don't go as planned forcing them to survive on foot crossing the desert, always under attack. This was well done. The film is French but the version I seen was dubbed in English. I think it would be better watched in the original language. It was a French Behind Enemy Lines or Courage Under Fire. The cinematography was stunning as you went from the snow to the deserts. The sound was amazing as you could hear the bullets flying by and sometimes even see them when they slowed down some shots. They go all out with the helicopters, guns and major explosions. There are lame scenes like when someone dies another person will clutch onto the body, then look up to the sky as dramatic music starts to play and gets gradually louder as the camera pans around them. You know the ones. Other than that quite an enjoyable film.

I don't get it. 6+ is a pretty high rating on IMDb. This movie did not deserve it. Have any of these people seen Black Hawk Down ? Hurt Locker? This just doesn't compare. At all. The character development is bleak. I mean, it's there, but horrible choices of what to show and develop these characters with . The main problem with this movie is that it just isn't realistic. I usually love French movies and was looking forward to this. I think they were trying to copy the American typical action movie. But this is way worse because this isn't what the French do. Or what they are good at. For instance, I would never hand a Frenchman a gun if I could hand him a piece of paper or a pan. They excel in some areas and a vapid movie isn't one of them. The soundtrack is terrible by the way. Almost so bad it ruins the movie. Skip this. Go watch a real war movie.

The beginning of this movie is great, it looks like a propaganda for the French army and the French Special Forces. The helicopters and planes look great, thanks to the cooperation of the French army. But at some point near the half of the movie, it begins to look like a parody. The soldiers don't seem trained enough nor equipped enough to be part of the Special Forces. And I'm not even talking about their support.Don't watch this movie if you can't shut down completely your critical thinking. Or then you have to watch the movie like a parody once at the half, but it's not that easy since it's supposed to be serious. And the movie gets boring after some time.

Without going into a plot summary, others have done that, it is almost impossible to list the things wrong - in a technical sense - with this movie. None of the characters who play soldiers have a clue about basic combat, they fire standing and grouped together, ignoring available cover. They abseil slowly, one at a time, from a chopper in a situation where there would have been less risk to the men and the aircraft if it landed to disembark them. The story might be fine for those who do not have a military background or training, but for me it was almost a comedy. They had an initial pick-up point a ludicrous distance from the operation, considering that right from the start they were expected to be transporting possibly wounded civilians. Not one part of the story was likely or plausible to me. It was the sort of thing you could imagine being dreamed up by a teenage girl whose sole experience was based on comic books. Very disappointing.
