Invaderbank The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

Robert Joyner The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

rzajac Sometimes I think I must have an organic brain issue: To me, films like South of Heaven are the gold standard of film westerns; it elevates the genre to a perfectly tuned noir, where style and mythos entwine like the gunpowder that the hero burns and huffs to keep himself grounded. The film's bizarrely low IMDb User rating makes me wonder if I need help, or what.I found the flick to be a wonder, from bottom (production) to top (mythos). The writing is absolute gold, the direction is fine-tuned, the acting beyond professional. And all the foregoing feels of-a-piece.The product teases you along its wispy thin tendrils of character development and dusky-framed scenario snapshots, and succeeds where so many films fail; at creating a truly immersive cinematic experience that transcends its pretense of genre (western) to create a compelling shadow play of morality, honor, and all else besides.Don't side with the rabble: Give it a shot.

Ian Dark Dwight Yoakam must be a hell of a guy. He's personable in interviews, plays and sings his own music with panache, and did a great job of acting in "Slingblade". He's such a cool guy that he was able to get a lot of his friends to be in a really bad Western.I love a good Western. They're especially scarce these days, but this was not one of them. Most people would consider this movie unwatchable, but I stayed with it because I hoped it would get better.There are a few reasons to see this movie, but not exceptionally strong reasons. One of them was Paul Reuben aka Pee-wee Herman who plays a bad guy named Arvil. That's right - Pee-wee Herman is a bad guy... and he's good at it. I used to make jokes about Pee-wee taking on Chuck Norris in a movie, but after seeing him in this, maybe it's not so far fetched. Reubens does a great job of creating a sadistic, quick tempered little man even with poor direction and writing.Let's talk about the screenplay a little. Dialogue seems clumsy and sluggish. It's as if the language mired that action in General Store bought molasses. My hunch would be that Billy Bob Thorton wrote his own lines because they're not even on the same planet as the rest of the cast in the movie. Thorton is fun to watch, even if I had a hard time understanding what he was saying. Maybe it because I was focusing on the guy playing his sidekick. I didn't see until the credits Thorton's sidekick was the late great songwriter Warren Zevon.What there is of a plot is hard to follow. The whole movie is awkward and unfocused. On the plus side, the scenery is nice and most shots are well lit."South of Heaven, West of Hell" is inaccurately described as a surreal Western. "El Topo" is a surreal Western (and much better film). Surreal shouldn't be a synonym for sloppy.

john-3222 SOUTH OF HEAVEN directed by Dwight Yoakam has the look of a classic western color motion picture. The cinematography by James Glennon must have inspired Glennon's later work on the HBO series DEADWOOD for which Glennon received an Emmy. The production design, the art direction, the wardrobe, the locations all worked as one piece with the cinematography to give the film a great cinematic look - the vision of the director is there in every detail. The performance of Bridget Fonda is a stand out among a cast of what must be Dwight Yoakam's friends that includes Bo Hopkins, Matt Clark, Scott Wilson, Paul Reubens, Vince Vaughn, Peter Fonda, Michael Jeter, Joe Unger, Otto Felix, Warren Zevon, and Billy Bob Thornton.

dezertblu I had high hopes for this film based on the cast, this was the absolute worst film I have ever watched in my entire life! There were 2 lines in the entire film that were any good and they weren't spoke by main character.....many of the costumes used weren't even clothing of the time! back in those days BLUE jeans were not made of denim, or form fitting! I am sorry but I don't even understand how the actors who played in this film were talked into doing it....as it was a complete let down in all ways....the acting was less than a child's junior high play, the plot jumped from left to right , then back again...some characters are introduced, then disappear never to be seen again, leaving you wondering about the point of them even existing, this movie made people of the old west look as though they were all idiots and inbreds, which I found upsetting, there were very very few intelligent people if any portrayed in this film.I'm done ranting..though I am still very bitterly disappointed with this film...as I have JUST finished watching it and its complete Crud!
