Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

Sin Nombre was a very interesting film to watch. I haven't viewed many foreign films before, but I found this one very compelling. I thought all of the actors did a great job, and I loved how some of the characters weren't even actors. I was confused a little during the story. They never explained why Sayra, a Honduran girl who is fleeing to America with her family, makes the journey. I know that most immigrants who journey to America do so to find a better life, but the movie never explained if Sayra even had a bad life. Overall, I thought that it was a phenomenal movie, and even though I do not speak Spanish, I could clearly understand what everyone was saying. It was a powerful movie and I recommend it. It is not for the faint of heart though, but the story is so compelling it just makes you want to continue watching.

Sin Nombre was a very eye opening film. The film immerses you in the Mexican gang culture through the story of a La Mara gang member named Willy, or Él Casper. If a viewer is unaware of what goes on in a gang, this movie definitely shows them. Él Casper recruits a young child named Benito, later named Smiley, into La Mara. Smiley's grandmother does not want Casper to take her grandson, but he does anyways. This definitely shows how much power the gangs have in Mexican culture. Smiley goes through many tough experiences to join the gang, including getting beaten for 13 seconds by the gang members and having to kill a member of the opposing Chavala gang. This was what really showed me the struggles that a child and family can go through due to the gangs. Another surprising part was at the end of the movie, when Smiley was ordered to kill Casper. He was ordered to kill Casper because during a train robbing mission, Casper killed the second leader of La Mara, named Lil' Mago. Casper was getting revenge because Lil' Mago tried to rape his girlfriend, Martha Marlen, and when she resisted, he killed her. If it was an American movie, Smiley would have not been able to kill Casper, and he would have gotten away, but instead Smiley shoots Casper after exclaiming, "Mara por vida." This means Mara for life, proving how quickly a small child's life changed after joining the gang. Overall, this movie showed how gangs can ruin the lives of Mexicans.

I really enjoyed this film because it tells us a great story. It starts off a bit dull and looks like a movie with a low budget and people that aren't star actors, but it shows us how people live in different parts of the world. For example, the gang violence in Mexico is frowned upon by the general population of Mexico. The gangs are in control but in this movie they did not seem to bother the ordinary people as much as their own gang members, rival gangs and the people they know or love. I can only recall gangs bothering ordinary people once or twice through out the whole film. This movie really keeps you up on your feet cause you never know whats going to happen next with the series of twists and turns as the movie progresses. This movie is not like any ordinary American film that we are used to, there is no happy ending. Although I felt like the ending was not as harsh as it could have been; to me the ending of the film was moderate. I learned many things from this film of which I did not know before. One being that the border is not actually a giant wall. In the movie it was portrayed as a.... The movie made me more knowledgeable about their living conditions in Mexico and the great deal of pain that people in Mexico go through to come to America. The movie made me think about how the lives of some people in Mexico can be so poor because of the gangs or by even having gangs in the area. However, some people in Mexico do live normal lives with no gangs related activity around them.

One thing that pulled my ratings down for this film is that the plot structure contains too many clichéd elements that don't seem to fit well with everything else. However, even with that taken into account, the movie did not disappoint too much fortunately, because its focus was on the smaller puzzles that make up the lives of the communities in question, rather than the lovey-dovey/gangster glorification/unneeded sense of insecurity/'bad boy' elements that are seen too much in movies nowadays. The director did present fruitful details resulting from extensive research of living with these subjects, whether on top of a train or in the midst of a cold inner empire of the gangsters. the REsult, A much more penetrative, underside view on the effects of poverty in a Latin community unseen in other movies, which typically lack the courage to be that direct. That is the beauty of this movie.
