Return to House on Haunted Hill Audience Reviews

GamerTab That was an excellent one.
VividSimon Simply Perfect
UnowPriceless hyped garbage
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Woodyanders A motley assortment of folks go inside a haunted house in search of a precious statue that's worth millions of dollars. Naturally, nefarious supernatural forces in the house start bumping them off left and right. While director Victor Garcia keeps the routine story moving along at a brisk pace, brings a glossy razzle-dazzle style to the hackneyed proceedings, and delivers plenty of in-your-face graphic gore, he alas crucially fails to generate much in the way of essential tension or creepy atmosphere (only a sequence involving sexy lesbian ghosts manages to provoke an eerie and unsettling vibe). Moreover, William Mason's by-the-numbers script follows a grindingly predictable path; it's pretty easy to figure out in advance who's going to either live or die. The often annoying rapid-fire editing and variable CGI effects don't help matters any. The cast do their best with the so-so material: Amanda Righetti as the troubled Ariel Wolfe, Cerina Vincent as backstabbing bitch Michelle, Tom Riley as nice guy Paul, Erik Palladino as greedy jerk Desmond, Steven Pacey as pushy professor Dr. Richard Hammer, Andrew Lee Potts as the sarcastic Kyle, and Gil Kolirin as tough ex-wrestler Norris. Genre favorite Jeffrey Combs does well as the evil and sadistic Dr. Vannacutt. An okay diversion.
utgard14 Lame sequel to House on Haunted Hill with an extremely contrived plot about an evil idol hidden in the same house from the first movie. Amanda Righetti stars as the sister of Ali Larter's character from House on Haunted Hill. She and her boyfriend are kidnapped and forced to go into the house by some guy looking for the Baphomet Idol. Whatever. I will say that Amanda Righetti is the best part of the movie and the only actor that you're likely to even remember from this. Everybody else is bland and forgettable. That goes double for Erik Palladino, who fails miserably at being a hammy villain. It goes without saying there is nothing scary about this movie. It's one of those horror movies that just tries to be entertaining in an 'action movie with gore' sort of way. The first movie wasn't scary either but it was fun, just like the classic William Castle movie it was a remake of. This isn't fun at all. It's just ugly and stupid. Avoid at all costs unless you're willing to stomach 80 minutes of crap just to look at Amanda Righetti's prettiness.
davidtheawesome95 Now, I know one should never expect much from a sequel unless it's The Dark Knight or Purge: Anarchy, but this comes so close and stills falls short. The original had much better acting with people who knew how to control their tone of voice when necessary; I literally watched the House on Haunted Hill 3 times in a row. That's where most sequels go wrong, inferior acting due to lower budget or just plain bad casting. spoiler alert: Every time something happens that would make anyone sane or normal scream their head off, the actor is either speechless or starts bitching about how "ghosts don't exist"; even though he is standing in a pool of blood. That is where the writing went wrong. The Dialogue was poorly thrown together with little regard for continuity of the first film's events, and the reactions assigned to the characters in each murder scene are just under par and not plausible. If that wasn't enough, the entire idea presented in the first movie involving simple evil trapping souls is reduced to an Indiana Jones treasure hunt with a big breasted heroine seeming to possess the speed, strength and guts of a marine. I mean hey, if she actually was a marine OK, but suddenly giving a magazine editor a bad ass arsenal of skills doesn't do for me, and no it's not because she's a girl. But seriously, the bone crunching that should have been present is non-existent, with each bloody seen sounding more like jello being ripped and tossed rather than a human body. Despite all this, there are some good features. The past memories was an interesting turn, although a seeming migraine feature may have been needed to sell it. And the deaths were in fact very creative. All in all, this is a straight to netflix and DVD movie. If your looking for a haunted house block buster feature, try A Haunting in Connecticut, but if you just want a mildly creepy film with fun death scenes and an ancient demon god, look no further!
Philip Keenan I absolutely hated House on Haunted Hill 1999. It was one of the most stupid, lamest, cheesiest films I had seen. But when I saw the cover for this at the DVD store. I decided to rent it out just for the hell of it. And I had no regrets at all. This movie cuts right to the chase. With its dark visually dynamic opening credits accompanied with thrilling fast paced music. I was now ready for the the movie to commence. The movie then falls into a stylish glamorous beginning to establish the smart likable characters, with a great cast including Amanda Righetti and Steven Pacey. This is supported well with a great warm look, with pleasing camera angles. There are many references to The Grudge 2. Like Grudge 2, the story is continued with the sister Ariel of the protagonist from first film. The setting of the film is also set in a Haunted House. Other elements from The Grudge 2 include; the journal, the infamous "hallway sequence," Ariel's sister's ghost of which resembles Kayako from Grudge 2, and the house in this film is also haunted by recurring deaths that happened in its history. There was also a certain scene in the film which referred to Psycho 1960, which was when Ariel and Paul were discussing her sister (Sarah) when they are interrupted by a man who walks into the room also looking Sarah. Just like a scene with Leila Crane, Sam Loomis and Detective Arbergahst. Every kill scene in this refers back to a scene from the past if which patients were murdered. Showing dark horrifying flashbacks. The film also contains a consistent professional script, that has comedy, seriousness, sex and thrill with drama and conflict. Its a great film that deserved a theatrical release. My cousin also enjoyed this as well as my friend and a girl I had recommended this to.
