Maybe I'm getting softer. Or maybe this franchise has numbed the critiquing cortex in my brain...yes, it's definitely that. The more times I watch this chapter, the more I'm finding it to be a guilty pleasure. Don't get me wrong, it's still bad and just has the odious whiff of Paul W.S. Anderson. Poor and utterly cheesy dialogue blended with the occasional bad CGI and 3D gimmicky nonsense. The plot is so convoluted that everyone is being brought back as clones or are somehow still alive. I don't know...I just go with it now. However, despite all this I do find enjoyment in the small crevices. Those cracks being the musical score (which is the best in the series by far) and the supporting characters that actually have a tiny bit more personality. Ada Wong and Leon Kennedy's actors have less range than a ticking metronome, but reintroducing past characters felt rather nostalgic. Visual effects have improved dramatically. Milla Jovovich keeps on increasing her "badassery". The final fight scene is the best choreographed action sequence in the series. The editing was abysmal but watching Michelle Rodriguez annihilate two guys in hand-to-hand combat felt satisfying to watch. Retribution went for full on action with sci-fi traits, and to be honest I'm on board now. This franchise has ended me, plus I'm slightly drunk so there...cheers! One more to go!!

I can't begin to describe the full awfulness of this sad, boring, predictable, yet incomprehensible movie. WHY does the bad guy exist? WHY does he want the entire world destroyed by zombies? WHAT exactly does the corporation get out of this wholesale destruction of everything? This movie was so silly, so nonsensical that I'm having trouble giving an accurate review. Just nonstop violence, nonsensical dialogue, a plot that is incapable of being followed. I HATE this movie and I LOVED the first one. This is a waste of time for anyone, even a fan of the franchise. The violence does not come close to making up for the lack of plot or sensible dialogue.

I said at the end of the fourth chapter in the 'Resident Evil' series that writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson needed to do something different and fresh with the next two additions. Based on what I saw in 'Resident Evil: Retribution' I think he knew he had to as well, he just didn't know how to do it. This one is the most unique of the first five films, however that doesn't necessarily equate to quality. In fact if anything it ended up making things even more bland than before. The acting in this one was noticeably worse than any other entry in the series. There were some truly horribly delivered lines at times. Milla Jovovich on the other hand continues to be a bright light in the series. She does what she does well. She's likable and pulls of the "badass" tag very well. 'Resident Evil: Retribution' is almost certainly the worst entry in the series to date. This film is living proof that this set of films has outstayed its welcome. If you're not adding something to story each time then why are you continuing to the make the films, other than for money? There is still one more film to go, 'The Final Chapter' which I plan to see this week. I can only hope that the series goes out on a high note, and maybe achieves some originality and freshness. Based on this entry though, I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Alice (Milla Jovovich) and the Umbrella corporation are back at it in the fifth installment to the Resident Evil franchise. After the helicopter assault the Arcadia ship led by Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), Umbrella captures Alice and puts her through torture and experimentation. Alice discovers that she is in a test facility with multiple big city locations including Tokyo, New York, and Moscow. A war has sparked between Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) and the rogue artificial intelligence known as the Red Queen. Wesker sends an extraction team to the Umbrella facility to help Alice escape but the Red Queen uses Jill Valentine, more clones, and zombie mutants to try and stop them.During the experimentation, Umbrella convinces Alice that she has a daughter, Becky (Aryana Engineer). The extraction team has a familiar face with Luther West (Boris Kodjoe) and also includes Barry Burton (Kevin Durand) and Leon (Johann Urb). The clones are of familiar faces from previous films including Rain (Michelle Rodriguez), One (Colin Salmon), and Carlos (Oded Fehr). The movie also brings back monsters from previous films including the ax-toting giant and the crawling creatures from the first film. Alice also teams up with another super soldier Ada Wong (Bingbing Li) to take on the Red Queen's zombie and clone army.Check out more of this review and others at swilliky.com
