It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

I enjoyed this movie. It made me think about my own relationships that might need mending. Also made me happy to see Catherine keener's character let go of hard feelings, and just forgive.Everyone needs to love their mom!

So, hubby decides to divorce wifey. Wifey then goes to her mother's place for vacation with her son and daughter and on the same day, the exact same day; son meets girl, daughter meets boy and mother is "met" by man. Some days later in the movie, again, on the same day... Mother has sex with man, daughter has sex with boy and son makes out with girl.Later in the movie, mother and kids move into mommy's/grandmommy's house, where, all three love interests are available and oh so ready and willing to be of some assistance.Meanwhile, boy kills deer in front of daughter and completely disregards her feelings, then he later tells her that's her problem. She then, instead of forgiving him, which she still shouldn't do, because she is not wrong, rather, introspects and faults herself. While again meanwhile, man slept with the mother of the mother; aka grandmama, and didn't make this known (actually he didn't tell, she found out; thus, he continually lied) until he slept with the mother of the kids. He then accuses mother of always fighting with everyone. Mother then does exactly what her daughter did. Looks within, blames herself pretty much, and seemingly takes man back.Mother, son and daughter with all their love interests, whom they all acquainted, the same day, then live happily ever after.Mmmkay, sure.

It is June and all the TV series are into reruns so my wife and I searched Netflix streaming for something to entertain us. We found this movie and we were entertained, me more than my wife I believe. It starts in New York City and Catherine Keener is Diane Hudson, mother of two and a type A attorney. The two kids are about to go off to college and her husband tells her, right before their house party, he wants a divorce.Diane deals with this by taking a road trip to see her mother, apparently estranged for 20 years. Along go the kids, Nat Wolff as Jake Hudson and Elizabeth Olsen as Zoe Hudson.Grandma lives where else but Woodstock. She is played well by Jane Fonda as Grace who in her real life was somewhat of a flower child and war protester. In her 70s she still lives about the same life she did back in the 1960s and even grows pretty good pot for the locals.Everyone from out of town meets a love interest in Woodstock, there are protests in the streets and a festival. Even Idol contestant Katherine McPhee makes a singing appearance. The whole movie is quite quirky and entertaining if you like that sort of thing. The whole theme is "love", the need for people to quit carrying emotional anchors around and instead just "release" old grudges and enjoy life.

I was a small child in 1969, but I have always heard of Woodstock and totally elevated the teenage hippies in my neighborhoods to iconic status. I used to ride my bike up to where they would be hanging out in the street in the coolest clothes ever. They were always kind to me. My high school years were the "preppy" years. This movie makes me realize I have denied my inner hippie and have been none the better for it.I'm not going to go protest, or have full moon tequila parties, or grow illegal plants or anything, but I feel inspired to bury my judgmental thoughts and anger that I don't want to admit are in me, but they are. Only a person in touch with their own inner reality could have written a movie like this. Sure, it's clichéd. It had some scenes that were way over the top, but the performances by all of the leads and supporting cast make Kyle Maclachlan's character seem like he alone represents the uptight worker bees on Manhattan Island. Keener's character escaped that world through finding peace. But it took her some time. The film is a journey for Keener's character and kids. They let go of misunderstanding and find peace, love, and understanding. The hurt gets buried, and acceptance and happiness comes from letting so much urban influence go. This film made me relax. It has inspired me to let some personal hangups go. The tag line sums it up: Life is a journey. Family is a trip. And with that, it's easy to enjoy this kooky little movie and stop and smell the roses around you:)
