Jean Rouch adapted Julius Amédée-Laou's stage play into a fictional film that explores the complex relationship between two Caribbean women confined in a Sainte-Anne sanatorium. A young nurse is hired to care for patients at the facility, she begins working with a long-time Martinican patient who has spent 50 years locked away there. As their interactions deepen, the line between reality and delusion starts to blur. The interchange becomes increasingly complicated as the nurse and patient journey deeper into madness together.
