Why so much hype?

Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.

The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

I thought this movie was funny. I've watched it more than once. I think it's underrated. I don't understand why.

Continuing my plan to watch every Eddie Murphy movie in order, I come to Norbit (2007)Plot In A Paragraph: Norbit (Murphy) a shy, mild-mannered guy, is married to an abusive, obsessively fat, sex hungry woman (also Murphy) named Rasputia. If Dreamgirls opened any doors for Murphy, Norbit shut them again!! All the criticisms aimed at this movie are correct, and personally, I didn't find much to laugh at, but boy did the two kids (12 year old boy and a 8 year old girl) I watched it with, laugh their little ass's off!! I mean hysterical laughing!! I smiled and laughed more at them laughing, than I did at the actual movie. They were still saying "How YOU doing??" In the voice of Rasputia as I wrote this.A lot of the jokes are recycled as we watch Rasputia break bed after bed, whilst jumping on Norbit for sex!! We see her repeatedly fart and honk the car horn with her boobs!! All of which had the kids laughing. I have to say, watching the kids laughing, does make me warm to a movie. I will say this Thandie Newton has never looked hotter in a movie. Norbit was a hit, grossing $95 million at the domestic box office to end the year, the 30th highest grossing movie of the year. This would be the last movie with Murphy in front of the camera, to finish in the top 30 movies of the year, or to make a decent profit at the domestic box office.

I guess Gross and Bad Taste are two apt terms that describe Norbit, a film that most critics took a hatchet to.As in the The Nutty Professor Murphy appears as multiple characters. Here he plays Norbit, the nerdy orphan nice guy who gets pushed around. Rasputia, the obnoxious, selfish and obese woman who connives Norbit to marry her and treats him badly. Lastly Mr Wong, the man who ran the orphanage where Norbit was raised and who thoroughly dislikes Rasputia and her brothers.Norbit meets up with his childhood sweetheart (Thandie Newton) where he finds he still has affections for her but disappointed that she is now engaged to get married to a sneaky businessman (Cuba Gooding Jr). Norbit also catches Rasputia cheating with the dance instructor and realises things must change. The film is full of low brow humour, gross jokes, slapstick and stereotypes. Critics hated but it was a big box office hit. Murphy makes Norbit likable as a lovable loser and you have to admire the make up effects as Rasputia, it is more than a guy in a fat suit playing a harridan. It is not the greatest comedy ever made but not as bad as its reputation suggests.

My problem with this film is as follows: It's not offensive. Humour, in my opinion, is not offensive. This film simply lacks quality. This is what would happen if you taught a third grader all the sexual, racial, and societal humour of a thirty-year-old but left them with the brain of a third-grader. Essentially, there is no quality here. Just not funny, and it's not bad enough to fit into that category of "so bad it's good." It's neither funny, racist, offensive or anything at all. It's not worth wasting your time watching. I watched this movie with a girlfriend and didn't chuckle once, I was simply bored. I miss the good old days of Blazing Saddles and good social commentary.
