This is a lot of fun, and the time passes pretty quickly. I am not familiar with Musset's plays, but the story comes to life fairly well under Civanyan's direction. Gerard Jugnot as van Buck, a grasping merchant who also has a sympathetic side (he was cuckolded by his brother), plays very well. It was good to see him get away from those Bronzes comedies. Jean Dujardin has been rising in popularity lately (I must go see The Artist) and he displays a sure hand in comedy. He is very good as Jugnot's wastrel nephew--just the right blend of sleaziness and charm--but he doesn't make me forget Depardieu in Cyrano, Belmondo in Les maries de l'an II or Noiret in Que la fete commence: these are the real masters in period comedy.Melanie Doutey can sit there and read the phone book, I'd still be enchanted by her. Since I saw her as Magimel's sister in La fleur du mal I have been looking out for her films. This is a good addition to her filmography.

Six years prior to his effort sourced from an Alfred De Musset play, Eric Civanyan had transposed another play for the screen: "Tout Baigne" (1999) with underwhelming results. "Il Ne Faut Jurer...De Rien!" reproduces the same action from Civanyan with however slightly different results. It's a more appealing film than its predecessor but not necessarily a more palatable one. Maybe Civanyan is more in his element as a stage director as he had already directed his play on stage with some actors here.The easy changes of space show that Civanyan succeeded in transposing his play to the screen, erasing thus problems of space. Splendid scenery, lush costumes are perfectly adapted to France in 1830 and confer to the film a strong appeal. The same goes for a clean cinematography. But although Civanyan remains faithful to Musset's spirit and set out his stalls for his work: under their frivolous, light appearances Valentin (Jean Dujardin) and Cécile (Mélanie Doutey) don't really believe in true love and the former loses himself in a life of debauchery, his film has major drawbacks that stop it from being a canonical work. First, in the type of comic employed. Between verbal comic lines, gags or situation comedy, the film has trouble to find its lasting comic tone and rhythm. Dialogs are old-fashioned: a modern re-writing wouldn't have hurt. See Jean Paul Rappeneau who rewrote with Jean Claude Carrière, "Cyrano De Bergerac" (1990). Besides, it would have been interesting to adapt the spirit of the play and its main themes with a contemporary eye. Instead, the director preferred to take refuge in a linear progression.What about the cast? Jean Dujardin has the panache of Jean Paul Belmondo and beside him, Mélanie Doutey delivers a sparkling performance. Gérard Jugnot is good and it's the least we could expect from him but that's all. In counterpart, the actress acting Cécile's mother wasn't a judicious choice.You can relax yourself with this little comedy but it is unlikely it stays for a long time in your mind.

Little new here story-wise so if the cast make a mess of it there's nowhere left to go. With the likes of top-billed Gerard Jugnot there's not much chance of that but British viewers may find it hard to reconcile Jean Dujardin's facial resemblance to and adoption of the mannerisms of Leonard Rossiter to give credence to his Flynn-like seducing and brawling. As Valentin his lifestyle of choice revolves around women, gambling and, when necessary, fighting. Uncle Van Buck (Gerard Jugnot) wants to marry him off to our old friend the impoverished Baroness Cecile (Melanie Doutey) but with no desire to settle down he bets his uncle that he can seduce the Baroness with, as it were, one hand tied behind his back, thus proving her no better than any other woman and certainly not wife material. As I said an old story but one with nice touches of the kind that Ophuls or Billy Wilder would not have been able to get away with like the sign outside the bordel, a variation on those Black Forest Weather Indicators, or our introduction to Valentin, blindfolded in the bordel, identifying each girl by the taste of her nipples. They didn't make them like that in the old days. All in all a delightful soufflé.
