Great Film overall

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.

I sat down to watch this movie with my 7-year-old brother not knowing what to expect having not seen the first "Nanny McPhee." I was surprised about how brilliant this film turned out to be, even though watching it was my decision. For those who are unfamiliar, this movie is about a woman named Isabel Green. She lives with her three children, and her husband is off fighting in a war. When the Greens' two cousins, the Grays, come for a visit, the five children start causing trouble for Isabel. Who is the one to fix this problem? Nanny McPhee. With the amazing cast and beautiful acting, I thought this movie was fantastic. It had the right amount of humor and magic to make everything work. During the more serious scenes (mainly the scene with Norman and Cyril after they receive the telegram), I felt the same emotions as the characters. Though I enjoyed all the characters and cast members, there are a few that stood out to me. Eros Vlahos and Asa Butterfield as Cyril Gray and Norman Green. These two young actors stole the show at most parts! Eros is a great comedy actor, and made me laugh several times. Asa was funny as well, but it was the emotion that he added to the character that made him stand out. Well done to these two boys.I give this movie an 9/10. The ONLY reason I'm not giving it a full 10/10 is because I think that some things could've been explained just a little better (the only instance I can think of at the moment is when the Greens got the telegram from the war office. I knew what it meant, but I'm not sure if my brother did. Other younger viewers might not understand right away. It is discussed again later on, of course). Other than that, I think this movie was brilliantly made and cast and everything. I would completely recommend this movie to anyone; especially anyone who loves funny, clever, and heartwarming movies.

What an incredible movie. Just fantastic. All of the cast was absolutely phenomenal, especially the kids, they were amazing! You know you're a talented actress when you don't have the leading role but you still make the whole movie, and that's what Maggie Smith did. She was hysterical all the way through, some highlights being when she is frantically waking up her husband because she wants him to see the bomb go off, when she tries to sit on the cow patty thinking it's a cushion, and when Isabel goes into her store to find that by "putting the flour away", she really means dumping it all over the floor, but the best part of all was right at the end. Nanny McPhee says goodbye to Aggie, and Aggie pulls a little silver rattle out of her dress pocket, it clicked to me and to other fans of the first movie that Maggie Smith is playing a full grown version of Baby Agatha from the first movie. I suggest seeing the first movie before the second one, because it's okay standalone but there's at least one reference to the previous movie. The part when the father gets home is ever so slightly corny for all us cynics out there, but it didn't put a damper on my enjoyment of the film, and I really really liked this. I recommend it to anyone, particularly people with kids of any age. Great film.

Emma Thompson is back as both the writer and the star as Nanny McPhee, but this time hired a director. She "returns" but not to the same family. This is a whole new set of situations. It is during the war and the nice family is struggling to make ends meet and keep the farm while dad is away, fighting as an Army man. Relatives from London come to visit for a while and along with the kids in the family make an impossible situation. Until a knock on the door, and there she is Nanny McPhee, 'small c, capital P.' She is sent by the Army to help, but we know she has certain magical qualities, and rapping her walking stick on the floor or the ground makes wonderful things happen.Maggie Gyllenhaal is Isabel Green, the mother. Rhys Ifans is good as Phil Green, the brother-in-law who is no good, has gotten into debt by gambling, and is trying to get Isabel to sign the farm over to him. It is good to see Maggie Smith, here as Mrs. Docherty who seems to run the local store, badly.I must admit I had lots of trouble sticking with it during the first scenes, in the muddy barnyard, with animal feces everywhere and of course all the kids getting into it. But once Nanny McPhee showed up it got watchable. Still, not that enjoyable a movie for adults. Mostly silly stuff.

I liked Nanny McPhee very much because of its naughty sense of humor, honest emotions and excellent performances from actors who did not underrate their presence in a family movie.I guess I was not the only person who thought like that, because the film had an unexpected economical success, which is the reason we now have its obligatory sequel, called Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. And even though it lacks of the refreshing originality from the first movie, I have to admit this sequel kept me entertained, although it did not find it to be very memorable.Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang feels like a rehash of Mary Poppins, even though it is inspired on the literary series of Nurse Matilda, written by Christianna Brand. But in the hands of Emma Thompson in her screenwriter facet, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang has a likable balance of politically incorrect humor and a sincere didactic message of an innocent intention and invaluable utility.Having said that, I found the structure from the film to be a bit modular, with a parade of comical routines, domestic crisis and family dramas solved by special effects or by the expected morals that teach the children a lesson of moderation, cooperation and discipline. As for the actors, Thompson always feels credible in her character, something which is enriched by the subtle expressions she has on various scenes.Maggie Gyllenhaal is perfect as a British woman, and not only because of the accent she adopts, but also because of her general bearing and attitude.Maggie Smith, Rhys Ifans and Ralph Fiennes also bring competent performances, even though they do not have too much material to work with.In conclusion, I liked Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, even though it is not even remotely as funny, ingenious or subversive as the first film.Nevetheless, I think I can recommend it.
