Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

Sorry, but this just doesn't work. There are many aspects in this film which aren't able to stand. First off: originality. There is basically none. How many movies have we already seen with the same subject? Somebody kidnapped and trapped in a house inhabited by a dysfunctional family who loves murder and torture. I think I got to 10 movies watched with this same plot.Second: the acting. Olga Fedori is a walking statue. No expression on her face, in a situation where a turmoil of feelings would go through just anybody. The rest of the cast has the opposite problem: all of them overact, making the final result unbelievable and goofy.Third: the enjoyment. This is supposed to be a scary film. Well, there's not much to be scared about. There is no tension whatsoever, you don't feel the impending doom, you don't feel for any of the characters, who are rather flat and unsympathetic (except maybe for Birdie, who is hateful enough to make you want to kill her with your own hands). Everything is rather boring.Last but not least: the developing of the events. Everything is very very predictable, the ending is hurried and badly scrambled together. So, in the end, this film just doesn't work too much. It tries to shock with a few repelling scenes, but this can't be enough to make it a good choice for an evening at home. There are far better things in the same genre.

Young Polish immigrant office cleaner Lena (a fine and convincing performance by Olga Fedori) finds herself imprisoned in the dingy fortress-like home of a deranged family headed by the monstrous Dad (a frighteningly intense performance by Perry Benson) and his sadistic spouse Mum (well played with bloodcurdling calm by Dido Miles).Writer/director Steven Shel grounds the grim and gripping premise in a plausibly drab and sordid everyday reality, ably crafts a bleak and nasty tone, puts a welcome and refreshing emphasis on creepy characters and uncomfortable suffocating atmosphere over cheap scares and excessive graphic gore (the bulk of the savage violence is implied rather than explicitly shown), and explores the more perverse, dysfunctional, and claustrophobic aspects of working class family life with a fiercely unwavering clarity. Moreover, this movie not only acquires an extra potent and unnerving edge from the fact that everything that happens in the story remains within the realm of possibility, but also makes powerful and provocative points about both the ruthless extremes people will resort to in order to survive and the foul corrupting influence bad parents can have on their children. Benson and Miles are positively staggering in their grotesque behavior; they receive sturdy support from Ainsley Howard as jealous conniving bitch Birdie and Toby Alexander as mute catatonic Elbie. A real flesh-crawling pip.

This film is pure excellence!! Sheil does a brilliant job and grabbing your attention and keeping it right from the beginning, and he shocks over and over! The best performance comes from Perry Benson as 'Dad'. He manages to convey the screwed up, twisted personality of Dad without breaking a sweat! Dad really is the star of the movie, especially with his interesting sexual antics! The narrative of Mum & Dad is just genius! It's like the British real-life version of the Hewitt family from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Th difference is you can actually imagine that somewhere around Gatwick is a twisted family like this! The Mum & Dad sadistically 'adopt' teenagers to make into their children, yet then use them as slaves to aid their murderous and thieving lifestyle. The juxtaposition of the upbeat Christmas soundtrack really highlights the twisted actions of the family, especially for the big climax ending! This really draws you in as an audience, and makes you will protagonist kidnapped Lena on to escape! But can anyone escape from Mum and Dan?! Even their friends aren't safe! An absolute MUST see! Better than any other horror film out there! Britain at it's best!

Lena, a young Polish girl working as a cleaner at the airport, sort of befriends Birdy, a girl about the same age who can't seem to stop talking. When after work Lena misses her bus, Birdy and her silent brother Elbie invite Lena over to their house, which is right under the airport. A bit hesitant she takes the invitation and ends up in a family from hell.'Mum & Dad' is quite an awkward movie. The whole feeling is just plain weird. It reminded me of movies such as 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre', Rob Zombie's 'House of 1000 Corpses' and 'The People Under the Stairs'. It's brutal and there are (literally) body parts all around, but at the same time it's filled with dark humor. Not the kind of humor that lies thick on top of it, it never made me laugh out loud, but at the same time it's there, a lot. The Christmas scene for instance is unforgettable. The family really ís a family with it's own rules and values (a scene where the father tells the mother not to interfere with him disciplining the kids is a good example), it's just not something you can compare with normality. 'Mum & Dad' makes you cringe and grin at the same time. The characters were pretty well casted. Dad is a perfect pig and the thick accents they all had were really fitting. Is it a brilliant movie? Nah... not really. But for horror fans with a sense of humor it is absolutely worth watching. Just do not take it too seriously.
