In the extras features of the DVD of "Marrowbone," there was a lengthy segment of deleted scenes. One of those scenes was the presentation of a birthday cake with candles from Allie to Jack. When he blew out the candles, he made a wish that in his imagination he was celebrating his birthday with his sister and two brothers. If restored to the film, that scene would have framed many of the film's complexities in the context of "our story," a kind of family album that memorializes the saga of four siblings. From the bonus segments, the viewer meets the actors, director, producers, and other film artists. Clearly, there was a substantial amount of talent collaborating on this well-photographed film. On the other hand, there was clearly the intent of combining so many different film styles, including suspense, romance, horror, and fantasy, that the film eventually became a hodgepodge, deflecting the momentum away from the human story of the Marrowbone family.Of all of the different goals of the filmmakers, the one that emerged more completely than the others was the romance between Jack and Allie. Out of the convoluted evolution of the Fairbairn family to the Marrowbones, one constant was the devotion that Allie felt to the various family members. In another one of the deleted scenes, there is a brief sequence where we learn that Allie herself was an orphan, raised by her aunt and uncle. The scene offered a rationale for how, as a displaced person, Allie felt a bonding with the Marrowbone clan. Late in the film, a psychiatrist finds it difficult to understand a life choice made by Allie, especially in the context of the theme of freedom that is so important to the Marrowbone children. But with that deleted scene, Allie's story comes more clearly into focus.Film viewers expecting suspense and chills from a horror film may be disappointed with "Marrowbone." Indeed, the filmmakers may have made a wrong turn in teasing the audience with elements of the supernatural. But the real strength of the film was not in its shock value, but in unfolding of a beautiful love story, supported by some magnificent location footage of an idyllic world.

Seen trailers of this film & to be honest, they seemed to sell it well that it was going to be good. But sadly it goes straight under the list/category of "The Trailer was better than the Film", it really wasn't that great. Boring in a lot of places with weak scares & only 2 scary moments at most in the film. The film follows 4 siblings & their mum move to a remote family house with mirrors covered along with the attic bolted, the chimney also covered up & a little "safe house" the siblings made out of sheets & covers. Their father was an abusive & them moving far away to a remote house somehow is designed to get away from him. That's basically the plot there, though the plot details & twists themselves are so confusing it's difficult to describe them here. The film made no sense from the middle part, & the film didn't feel like a horror all too much, there was a great lack of scares & visuals that could've made this film so much better & watchable. Not to mention more fun if the plot had been a lot more easier to understand. I also felt the film was quite boring at a lot of parts & dragged too much. Too much story & not enough action, that type of film. The twist was a bit crap, well it wasn't all that & a plate of chips that's for sure, it was pretty bland & ironically enough, too simple. The film itself is misleading considering the horror elements seem out of place/put there to create mystery or divert the viewer(s) from the real issue(s) in the film. It isn't a horror like its marketed. It's a bland, boring, drama, thriller, mystery film, which I dislike considering I was wanting a creepy horror film. The mum charterer was there for the sake of it (& forgotten about at the end) as were the jump scares, & creepy moment designed to make this a horror & divert the viewer from thinking this film is anything but. Making the film there for nothing. Overall, disappointing & not one of the best "horrors" of 2018. 2/10
