After shooting to fame with Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” (1960), actor Marcello Mastroianni (1924-1996) starred in more than 160 films in his nearly half-a-century career. Directors Mario Canale and Annarosa Morri look into the melancholic charm of one of the most famous Italian actors through interviews with his two daughters, Barbara and Chiara; directors Fellini and Luchino Visconti; actresses Claudia Cardinale and Anouk Aimee; and in archival footage of Mastroianni himself. The subject matter ranges from Mastroianni’s passion for kidney-bean pasta and his addiction to the telephone to his famous laziness, humility and talent. Shown in black-and-white, Mastroianni — elegantly holding a cigarette in between his fingers — is undeniably the dandy.

Marcello, una vita dolce Audience Reviews

HeadlinesExotic Boring
Baseshment I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Lachlan Coulson This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
Tobias Burrows It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
FilmCriticLalitRao It is a true fact that documentaries about famous people related to cinema such as actors, actresses and directors are mostly boring affairs as there are moments in them when they try to glorify lives of cinema people. It is because of this partial attitude that very often a superficial gap between a star and a fan is created. It is a nice thing that Italian documentary film "Marcello,Una vita Dolce" is not at all a film which belongs to the former category. It is a film which is fairly honest in its assessment of one of the greatest actors not only in the history of Italian cinema but also in the history of world cinema. There are tributes from people who knew Marcello Mastroianni very well such as his daughter Chiara Mastroianni and his colleagues like Claudia Cardinale,Anouk Aimée and Philippe Noiret. We are talking about Marcello Mastroianni,a great human being and actor who scaled many wonderful cinematographic heights by dint of his hard work and humaneness. In this documentary film we get to see Marcello Mastroianni as an ordinary man rather than as a star.It is nice to see the manner in which all the major figures of Italian cinema pay their homages to one of Italy's most famous actors. They all agree unanimously that Marcello Mastroianni remained a true perfectionist who never missed any opportunity to learn new tricks of the trade. In this brilliant film,we discover many unknown facts about Marcello Mastroianni's life such as his never ending fascination for shoes and undying passion for telephones.Marcello,a sweet life is an important treasure for anyone who has anything to do with Marcello Mastroianni whether it is a dedicated fan or a serious researcher.Everybody will surely obtain something valuable to cherish from this creative documentary film.
