areatw The original 'Madagascar' was one of the funniest animated films I'd seen in a long time, characterised by witty humour, hilarious one-liners and some brilliantly funny characters. The sequel is unfortunately a downgrade, a cut-and-paste job that loses a lot of what made the first movie so good.The plot in the sequel isn't as interesting, in fact there's not much of a 'plot' - not a lot happens. It did make me laugh on occasions, but no where near as much as the first film. 'Madagascar 2' is a decent enough sequel but it's not as witty and smart as the original.

Stompgal_87 I first saw this in the cinema in 2008 and I initially thought it was better than the first but after having watched it for the first time in five years, I actually found it on par with the first.The opening of the film involving the back story of a young Alex (then known as Alakay) was rather unusual for a sequel but I soon found that it linked to Alex re-uniting with his parents after crash-landing in Africa. The penguins were even funnier here than in the first but I wish Mort had more screen time because he's so adorable. Like the majority of sequels I've seen, there are references to the first film such as news reports concerning the disappearance of Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman and the elderly woman beating up Alex as well as the baddie lion towards the end. The red mark she left on his bottom after slapping it was a bit scary because it reminded me of my fear of parents smacking their children in public, an issue I am totally against. In terms of other positive moments, the backgrounds were just as beautifully rendered as in the first and I couldn't help laughing when Alex repeatedly called out the name of his little blanket-thingie and an adult animal covering her cub's ears because it sounded like a slightly rude word (possibly a slang term for female anatomy). I also liked some of the background music, especially the whistly tune that accompanies the shark chasing Mort and the 'Good, the Bad and the Ugly' type music when the elderly woman beats up Alex. The baby versions of the four main animals were as cute as Mort and I also liked the song that played while baby Alex/Alakay was swept away to New York. This film reminded me of 'The Lion King' in parts, especially the opening back story and the main animals seeing several more of their kind. I liked the cut-out- animation segments that played during the first part of the closing credits as well as the CGI animation during the main feature.Overall I found this sequel an engaging watch and I found it more adventurous than the first. 8/10.

lisafordeay This half piece of nothing is a COMPLETE knock off of The Lion King just LIKE Disney's CGI flick The Wild. Alex finds out he has a dad,the dad owns the land,his evil brother doesn't want him to rule the land blah blah blah.The story picks off right after the first one and Alex(voiced by Ben Stiller) and his gang(Jada Pinkett Smith as the Hippo Gloria,David Schwimmer as the giraffe Melmon,and Chris Rock as Marty the Zebra)end up in Africa where Alex finds out that he has a father (voiced by the late actor Bernie Mac) but his evil brother (voiced by 30 Rock's Alec Baldwin) doesn't want him to rule the land and so he comes up with a plan to get rid of Alec's dad.The animation is great,the charcthers are great but seriously though is Dreamwork's TRYING to become Disney?? like Disney trying to be Pixar or Dreamwork's for that matter with the animation in CGI form.Yeah if I were you guys i'd skip this one and watch the original instead.

FlashCallahan New York Zoo animals, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo are still stranded in Madagascar,try and start to leave the island.They land in the wilderness of Africa, where Alex meets the rest of his family, but has trouble communicating with them after spending so much time at the Central Park Zoo… Not being a fan of the first movie, i wasn't expecting a lot from this sequel, other than 'cash-in'.I was very surprised to find that this usurped the original every way possible, and was a lot of fun, even though Julien was still very annoying whenever he popped up.the voice acting is well done, and the pop-culture references are very funny and quite intelligent, something that dreamworks have been doing now for a while to distract the adults from being bored.if anything, this could be 'the lion kings' idiotic cousin, as there are references sprawled along this movie referring to the Disney classic (sons lost, a bad lion wants to take control as the alpha lion, but with less trauma of course) there are a lot of life lessons as always in films like this, but they are subtle and short.the penguins almost steal the show again, but the granny takes credit for this, as she is probably the nastiest animated non-villain ever.a good sequel.
