Two distraught mothers, whose children were gunned down in a drive-by, team up to avenge their deaths after local authorities fail to take action. Lila & Eve is a revenge tale of 2 women going against the system that gunned down their children and it was better than most reviews suggested it was. Both Jennifer Lopez and Viola Davis did a very good on capturing the sadness within but also the every day life of a mother plus Shea Whigham was also pretty good. This is definitely a watchable and entertaining revenge crime drama... (7.5/10) (B+)

Lila is the good and Eve is the bad. Performances that is. Somewhat long in telling and several boring moments don't help this overdone melodrama. Jennifer Lopez as Eve was definitely mis-cast. Not much depth in her nor strength. Just a busy body giving orders to a distraught Lila. Lila on the other hand, Viola Davis, gave a touching and beautiful performance, considering the script was ordinary. I can't say when but along the way this film became a soap opera in the typical LMN way. I felt bad for Davis as she really gave it all she had, which was brilliant with lines that didn't match the passion she exuded. Too bad. Most of the remaining cast members said their lines but were no match to Davis as a mother who lost her son due to street violence. I wonder if we didn't have Eve in this story if it might have been a better film with Davis carrying it all on her shoulders. I do feel Lopez dragged it down. And I like Jennifer, just not in this type of role. Check her out in "Enough". Brilliant.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot change... The courage to change the things that I can... And the wisdom to know the difference."Lila (Viola Davis) and Eve (Jennifer Lopez) are two grief-drawn women after their children have been killed. Unlike others, they won't throw in the towel and want to take revenge. It's time they take matters into their own hands. You guessed it. It's just another revenge movie that's being released on mankind. This time it's about two grieving mothers who are about to face a brutal drug gang and their errand boys who are dealing on every street corner. That's an element that doesn't occur often in a revenge movie. Unfortunately it came across as quite implausible. The police hit a dead end, so the investigation isn't really progressing (but according to the two avenging angels, this is due to their laxness because the victims are colored individuals). However, the two innocent housewives, whose lives only consist of doing household chores, redesigning the interior and attending a support group for parents of murdered children, can get to the kingpin of this drug gang, just by using simple interrogation techniques and some data from a mobile phone. The acting part was far from bad. At certain moments Davis and even Lopez perform excellent. Davis was a complete stranger for me (that's because I hate television series and haven't seen "How to Get Away with Murder") but she's excellent at the beginning as the mother who collapses and survives on pills. A brilliant piece of acting. During the confrontations with the young rascals, her appearance as the clumsy fury wasn't that successful. I was more surprised about Lopez who, unlike her part in "Parker", showed she really can act decently. She was quite convincing as the self-righteous, rebellious vigilante who thinks that the concept of the support group is a bit too soft. She's the driving force behind Lisa's revenge.Maybe I wasn't paying attention enough or I was tired while watching "Lila & Eve", because I really didn't see that plot twist coming at the end. The film on its own wasn't so impressive however. It was rather a "ah, that's the direction they are going" feeling I had afterwards. The closure was a bit too sentimental and unreal. Ultimately, it's only an average, ordinary film so to speak. Nothing exciting or captivating. Even the acting couldn't save this film. In short, it's just one to add to your list of movies you should watch when you're retired, because you have plenty of time then. More reviews here : http://bit.ly/1KIdQMT

Lila and Eve reads well and has two decent leads and looked like an indie film so I was intrigued. I think the thing that annoys me the most about the film is that it thinks its unique. Its like it holds this mysterious twist that it believes the audience won't see coming and yet I had it nailed in the first half hour or less and everyone else will too because we've seen this twist before. There is a lot of emotion here to this story and a lot of potential but most of it is missed or lost when the story starts to get silly and convoluted. Its like they took a genuinely serious story and then another writer took over and made it go in a completely different direction. Its definitely an indie film and it has that vibe but that isn't even a reason as to why it isn't great. I guess I expected something along the lines of Death Wish or The Brave One and it has some of those elements but a very poor screenplay ultimately with some very clumsy directing that leaves you completely unsatisfied with the idea.Viola Davis is a great actress. She isn't necessarily one of my favourites but I know she has a ton of talent and seems very versatile. That's why I think this film was beneath her in a lot of ways. It is just a very weak script and her character is decent but lacks a lot of depth considering the intensity of the role. I think she does her best but it only serves to lift the quality of the film a little. Jennifer Lopez is a good actress too I think. It really does depend on her role and I don't think she has a lot of range but I think she is okay in the part. Her and Davis seem to fit alright but their characters are so much more intense than what the script gives them credit for. This is sort of a very dark, serious Thelma and Louise because Lopez has essentially talked Davis into taking vengeance on those that killed their children. Its a great concept, but poorly executed. The two of them are the focus of the film of course and I can't honestly say that anyone in the supporting cast is all that great and worth mentioning. The two main characters have very little depth so its a lot to ask for the sub-characters to be noticeable.I was pretty certain watching this that the director would be someone fairly new. However, Charles Stone has some experience under his belt but nothing like this at all. I mean his previous work included Mr. 3000 (which I remember seeing years ago and absolutely loving but that's beside the point.) This requires some time and effort and a much better script and much more heart behind the camera. I don't feel like he cared at all about how the film was shot. I did however smile and nod when I saw that this is really the only credit to writer Pat Gilfillan. Now I know that everyone deserves a chance and everyone has to start somewhere but I am convinced that 99% of the time you can see inexperience in work and this is an example. I think the idea is great but it misses the mark and ends up being mildly watchable probably due to the talent of Davis and yes even Lopez. They are very lucky they got two well known actresses in the role or it would have been completely overlooked. As it is, it is mostly forgettable. 6/10
