Late Marriage is an Israeli film that stars Lior Ashkenazi and Ronit Elkabetz together with Moni Moshonov and Lili Kosashvili. The film centers on Zaza, the 31-year-old child of tradition-minded Georgian Jewish immigrants who are anxiously trying to arrange a marriage for him. Unbeknownst to them, he is secretly dating a 34-year-old divorcée,Judith. When his parents discover the relationship and violently intervene, Zaza must choose between his family traditions and his love. Most of the main characters are Georgian-Israeli and the dialogue is partly in the Judaeo-Georgian language and partly in Hebrew. It was written and directed by Dover Kosashvili. The story centers on a couple sets out to find the perfect bride for their son, whether their son likes it or not, in this Israeli comedy. Zaza is a graduate student in his early thirties who has finally found the woman of his dreams -- Judith, a Moroccan immigrant with a daughter, Madonna, from a previous marriage. Zaza and Judith have similar interests, a great personal rapport, a keen understanding of one another's feelings, and excellent sexual chemistry, but for Zaza there's one little problem -- his parents. His mother Lili and father Yasha are bound and determined to marry their son to a nice Georgian Jewish girl (who is, of course, a virgin), and they not only disapprove of Zaza's relationship with Judith, they insist on fixing him up on dates as if he isn't in a committed relationship; when that fails to make an impression on Zaza, Lili and Yasha use emotional blackmail against their son, and Lili even goes so far as to confront Judith and insist she stop seeing her son.It is a different romantic comedy.Obviously,it is a highlight of Israeli cinema of the past decade which features an extremely powerful film.A tale of family tyranny and intergenerational conflict within a Georgian- Jewish community is what it is all about. This film feels truly lived in, and guides us without ever feeling manipulative or calculating. The performances of the cast are naturalistic and utterly convincing. The direction is also superb. It is a must-see for people who like good movies.

This is perhaps one of the worst films I have ever seen in over 70 years of watching movies. The acting is bad & I mean bad,no one has any idea of what or who they are portraying. This is an Isreali,French film that never should have been released without some editor fine-combing it.Our hero (ha-ha) is a good looking 31 year old spineless wimp who lets his parents walk all over him.The idea of arranged marriages in this day & age is ridiculous & not even one drop funny. I rent my films from NF & since I see one a night,it only cost about $1. It really wasn't worth it.My sympathy is for those who spent any more. Will say no more as I hate using bad words.

The movie is, on the surface about a strong willed family's attempt to steer their errant man child (as in doesn't follow the family rules on finding a marital partner who meets the requirements: younger; unmarried; unsullied; and malleable) out of independence towards conformity. We see him dragged off to sit and watch his, and a prospective bride's, family discuss them as pieces of merchandise. The callousness is presented as comedy, but is clearly intended for us to see how familial, tribal, values supersede those of the individual. The couple is encouraged to go off to the prospective bride's bedroom, where it is clearly intended for them to try out the merchandise. The older (31) male is clearly uncomfortable with the predatory nature of the girl (17), and ends up dealing with the "choice" offered with muteness. Soon we see that this is his preferred tactic within his familial zoo.As it turns out he already has a lover, an older(35)divorced woman with a child. To his family she is absolutely out of the question as a future member of the family, and soon they gather outside her apartment to plot how they will dissuade her.The responsibility of the situation is clearly foisted upon her, as the evil sorceress who has bewitched their boy (ironically she has attempted to put an amateurish spell on him by burning her underwear stained with his semen) and they troop up to the apartment to surprise the lovers. What follows is an insult fest aimed at the divorcée - in full view of her young daughter, who is treated kindly by the older women while they skewer her mother with contempt and the men threaten her with physical harm - who takes it quietly and almost expectantly of the required tribal ritual of casting her out of the picture as competition. This scene again seems to be presented as comedic, but comes across as a horror show to the uninitiated. Clearly no-one in the room seems able or willing to question the cruelty of the procedure. Our "hero" is mute, and the woman has no defense, telling us reams about how powerfully attached he is to the tribe, no matter how he might wish to be independent of it. And this is the crux of the movie. Blood is thicker than water but tribal blood is molasses. The final scene, of guess who's marriage celebration, shows him taking on the tribal mores of brutish cruelty, and destructive passive aggressiveness of the emasculated male. But it is clear that he offered up his testicles for sacrifice rather than had them removed. He is no pioneer, merely a dreamer; a man of inaction and his loss is his passion for risk taking; the core of vitality.

This was an unexpectedly enjoyable film. The male lead was quite good, as were many of the female leads. The film provides many insights into modern day Israeli life, and specifically into the very conservative traditions of some of the Georgians who emigrated there. In the tradition of "Little Miss Sunshine", the viewer is allowed a glimpse into this very dysfunctional family, and along the way we come to like and care for many of the characters. Even Mouki the dog steals the show. I wish the ending had turned out differently, but the viewer is allowed to draw his own conclusions as to what will happen in the future. A captivating film, there is never a dull moment, and it easily holds one's interest throughout its entirety. The fact that most of the cast is extremely attractive and accomplished actors makes "Late Marriage" pleasantly watchable.
