betty dalton Mysterious attacks in Lake Placid occur. Bridget Fonda heads out to Lake Placid to do research if there is an actual croccodile to be found in this tranquil lake. Bill Pulmann as sheriff protects her from any harm. Will they find anything or is it all a hoax? What follows is a story full of vulgar grannies, hilarious jokes and B movie reptile attacks. Oh yes, and there is also some romance going on.Who made this wonderful "Jaws" clone? Let's start by mentioning the legendary Stan Winston, THE MAN responsible for the terrific "Alien" creatures. He created the croccodile monster in this tale and it don't look scary at all. But then again this is a comedy and although there is some suspense it is mostly of the hilarious kind.I have seen it multiple times now and I keep laughing as hard as the first time. The incredible witty dialogues are to be thanked for that. Quote by a grannie living near the lake to a sherrif: "If I had a d*ck, this is where I would tell you to s*ck it". You gotta see this grannie to really enjoy this altercation with the law that wants to destroy the croccodile while the old grannie wants to cuddle the monster."Lake Placid" is much more than an average comedy. The simple story may deceive upon first look, but a lot of effort went into this picture to make it something special. This comedy truly stands the test of time and what makes it so endearing and hilarious are the terrific dialogues. The characters are credible, however stereotype they may be. The characters and the dialogue are really to die for. And when I can believe in the characters I can enjoy it again and again.At an endnote I wanna mention that lots of wise observations about croccodiles were interwoven in the dialogues. Some amazing TRUE ones: "Croccodiles have been worshipped more than other religions in ancient cultures. People thought croccodiles were godly". Well, they have been around for millions of years and they will probably outlive human beings. However in this flick croccodiles are just great material to make hilarious jokes about, topped with some witty romance with the lovely Bridget Fonda.

mrkobayashi-06496 The entire movie is littered with original and well-delivered sarcasm, perfect for this genre. If anyone gave it less then a 6/10 they didn't get the wit, or only like violence for violence sake. If you want to see everyone die, this was not your movie. But if you appreciate characters upping each other with sarcasm every other scene, then you picked the right movie. And Gleeson is brilliant as usual. Hard to think of any actors who can deliver lines as dryly as him. I would have given it a higher rating, but it did wander plot-wise at different moments throughout. Also i haven't been able to put my finger on it, but something was missing and i think it was character arc. No one really goes through any changes really, except the Oliver Platt character, and he was pretty shallow to start so... Could have used some more depth to their emotional states, but that did not hurt it at all as far as a summer ride type movie...

trashgang Took me 15 years to finally watch Lake Placid and the reason is very simple, I never heard a positive note about it even as it has rather famous thespians in it. But seen a few crock flicks they never could really get my attention, maybe Alligator (1980) did. But somehow I ran across Lake Placid via trailers so I tried it.People who are defending Lake Placid do say it's a comedy. Well, I agree, it's a big farce. Face it, I never had any scary moments and even as the crock looks great in all ways it never got my attention because there's a lot of talking going on and seen it full uncut it also didn't had gory moments a thing you expect from a crock bite, isn't it?What did you say, there are nasty bites, i agree again, but it's not gory at all. It's not because somebody is holding one's arm been bitten off that it is gore. I guess you get my point, a lot is done off-camera.And can the defenders tell me where the jokes are? Maybe I'm stupid or didn't get the point but no smile on my face.A bit predictable in places and the end is so,well, I just shut my mouth.
